IS IT TRUE THAT IF YOU COMMIT AMORTAL SIN, YOU MAY RECEIVE COMMUNION IF YOU MAKE A PERFECT ACT OF CONTRITION & GO TO CONFESSION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE? I DO NOT RERMEMBER WHERE I HEARD THIS. IT’S BEEN A WEEK AND A HALF AND I HAVEN’T BEEN TO CONFESSION YET I WAS TOLD THIS WAS WRONG. IS IT? DID I DO WRONG ?

CCC # 1415

“Anyone who desires to receive Christ in Eucharistic communion must be in the state of grace. Anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive communion without having received absolution in the sacrament of penance.”

My understanding is that if you are not in a state of grace, you still go to Mass on Sunday (but not receive communion).

Either pray at your pew (perhaps the prayer “An Act of Spiritual Communion”) or go forward with the line having your arms crossed and your mouth closed to receive a blessing instead of receiving the Eucharist.

Hopefully somebody will correct me if I’m wrong. I am fairly new.

If you are presented with the situation where you are at Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion and will not have another opportunity to attend Mass again for a long time (many months). You may receive Holy Communion after reflecting on your state of sin and reciting an Act of Contrition, with the intent of receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation as soon as possible. Maybe even right after Mass, before the priest leaves, since he won’t return for several months.

I am really new to the Catholic faith (signed up but not yet attended RCIA / RCIC).

Questions:
1)
What is an act of contrition and how do I do that?
What about “perfect” contrition? Is it possible to have “perfect” contrition and also sometimes stumble?

2) Are there many places in the United States where parishioners go months without having another opportunity to see a priest or go to Mass?

An Act of Contrition is a prayer expressing our sorrow for sins committed and asking for God’s pardon. It is also said in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Perfect Contrition requires full and complete detachment from the sins with absolute intention to avoid them. Perfect Contrition is difficult to attain but then only God can judge this.

No, This would only really come up in Mission areas or very remote areas if ever. It would never really apply in the US.
