Hi. I went to Catholic school and in 4th grade, in the last mass before going to a different school, I went ahead and received the Eucharist, even though I lacked the First Communion and I had been told for quite some time that only if I had it could I received the Eucharist.

It was the last mass and my family didn’t practice (though they did put me in Catholic school), I thought it was the last chance to receive the Eucharist.

I was very young (9 years old), but was it a sin? And was it mortal? Thank you.

So, you had your first Communion when you were 9. It is not a sin to receive First Communion before you had a class, infants are given communion in our Eastern Rites.

We who are above age 7/age of reason are supposed to make our first Confession prior to first Communion. Did you know that fact when you were 9? If not, then, there is no way the reception could be a mortal sin.

Hopefully you have continued to receive Reconciliation and the Eucharist since.
