This might sound like a dumb question to some people but bear with me…I am still a re-vert…😃 If you are not allowed to partake in communion during mass, (reason being you are out of the state of grace) you are still allowed to recieve ashes on Ash Wednesday, right?

Ashes are a sacramental- like holy water is. You do not have to be in a state of grace to receive sacramentals, but you are expected to understand their meaning, and respect that. Ashes are a symbol of repentance. When you receive ashes, you are saying to God and to the world that you are aware of your own mortality, and you acknowledge your sinfulness. At the imposition of ashes, the priest traditionally quotes God in the book of Genesis after Adam and Eve sinned. “Remember, Man, you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

Yep…he told ya right.
Have ya thought of fixin’ that state of grace problem?

anybody, CAtholic or not, Christian or not, is welcome to come to any Catholic church on ash wednesday to receive ashes as a reminder of our ultimate end, last things (death, judgement, heaven and hell), and need for repentence and continuing conversion.

So, are those in RCIA able to do this?
Yes they are.

When I went though RCIA, we met on Wednesday nights. The meeting on Ash Wednesday started with us recieving the ashes.

I received ash first time last year. I asked the Priest and my sponsors and they said that everybody can receive ashes.

Great! I am looking forward to this. I’ve never participated, what a wonderful way to start off lent, and lead to Holy Saturday when I am baptised, receive the Eucharist and confirmed 👍

The ashes in my Chruch are from palms that were used at, offcourse Palm Sunday, don’t know what other Churches do.
Like the others said there is no problem going to get ashes.

Yes, we are requested to bring in old blessed palms from the previous year and the school children watch them being burned into ashes during school on Tuesday (those old Weber grills are great!). Wednesday, we receive those ashes.

Church Militant: we are in the process of having our marriage convalidated, till then, I am unable to recieve communion.

On my return to the Church a little over a year ago, I was allowed to receive the ashes (even though I could not go to communion yet since I had not been to confession). This year, I have my palm leaves (from last year’s Palm Sunday) all ready to go to make this year’s ashes 👍
