My dear Marie5890,
I think it is good to be honest with ourselves and others. There are a lot of people for whom 2013 was a difficult year and they do not need to pretend to be happy and over joy. I am one of them.
The past two years have been the most difficult in my life. I think they do win the title. And, the two years previous to them were seriously challenging and finally culminated in a most difficult situation that left me suffering physically and emotionally. In consequence these past years have not been so prosperous.
I think inner peace is better than ‘happiness’. I am at peace with what I have suffered and I certainly hope it is over and better days are ahead. I recently read about how God has us in His hands and is molding us like clay. I like that image. In these difficult times I learned how little I am, many of my limitations and have died more to myself and as a consequence have allowed Christ to live more in me.
I am glad that I suffered so much in 2013, it has actually been a great blessing. If I had not suffered so much, I don’t know how I would have come to die to myself as much as I have. I am freer from attachments to the world and closer to Our Lord.
I welcomed the New Year on my knees, thanking Our Blessed Mother Mary for her intercessions, for allowing me to sense her love and presence in my life and for taking me to her son. I thanked Our Lord Jesus for molding me and asked that if it is to continue to give me the strength that I need to endure. We don’t really need to ask for fortitude. There is a Dominican saying that comes to mind: Dios aprieta pero no ahorca (God squeezes but He does not choke).
Sorry about the long post. What I am trying to say is that it’s okay to be honest and to not pretend to be happy. Economically 2013 was not great for you but finances is not all that we can be thankful for and peace with God is superior to happiness - in my book.
It’s a cold winter night and there thousands of people out there that are homeless. There are millions who went to sleep hungry in the world. So much is going on the in the world and I need to be thankful that I am not in a war zone right now, I have shelter, heat, electricity, food, my health is better, etc…, etc…, and I am thankful for being Catholic - what a great blessing! There are so many things to be thankful for…
You are in my humble prayers and I hope 2014 is a fruitful year for you.
