Reciting the Creed at a Nuptial Mass

I’m getting married in Taiwan, so I’m putting together a program for my wedding mass. My question is…Must the Creed be recited at a Nuptial Mass? or is it optional? I looked at other people’s wedding programs and saw that some included the creed but some did not. Also, some had a 2nd reading and some did not.

You can obtain the Order of the Mass from your priest to follow for your programs.

The Creed is not recited, the Rite of Marriage comes after the Homily and the Intercessions follow the Rite of Marriage.

The Liturgy of the Word must include an OT reading, NT reading, and Psalm, plus the Gospel. One is not free to omit readings.

I highly recommend you obtain a copy of the booklet by Joseph Champlin called Together For Life, which explains all of the different choices of prayers, readings, vows, etc.

I have never encountered a priest/deacon who chose the Gospel.

And, none of the wedding preparation guides I used mentioned this, nor did my own priest or deacon.

In all of my friends weddings, and my own, the couple chose all of the readings and the priest/deacon created their Homily based off of them.

From the Rite of Marriage, in the description of celebrating marriage during Mass:

“21. The liturgy of the word is celebrated according to the rubrics. There may be three readings, the first of them from the Old Testament.”

Some days require three readings (eg. Sunday). But other days can have two or three readings when there is a wedding.

“29. … If the rubrics call for it, the profession of faith is said after the general intercessions.”

Again, some days require the Creed (Sundays and Solemnities). Other days do not have the Creed.

I should have said it is the priest’s perogative to select the Gospel, no doubt a list of approved gospel’s is given to couples at these parishes, and the priest just needs to know what it is for his homily.

The Creed is ALWAYS allowed at an ordinary form liturgy if it is considered a “solemn local celebration”, and a wedding can certainly fit that generous rubric.

I agree, my post above was wrong, indicating the Creed was only for Sundays and Solemnities.
From the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) approved for the USA, which can be accessed from romanrite.com/girm.html :
“68. The Creed is to be sung or said by the priest together with the people on Sundays and Solemnities. It may be said also at particular celebrations of a more solemn character. …”.

The 1975 GIRM had “44. Recitation of the profession of faith by the priest together with the people is obligatory on Sundays and solemnities. It may be said also at special, more solemn celebrations. …”
The Order of Mass, in the Roman Missal, has the rubric:
“After the homily, the profession of faith is said on Sundays and solemnities; it may also be said in solemn local celebrations. [Footnote 1: See General Instruction, no. 44].”
(Roman Missal, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1985, page 368).

Just one note about the readings. At our Cathedral, we sometimes have weddings that occur during the anticipated Sunday vigil Mass (Saturday evening) and thereafter. The couple at the 5:30PM Mass must have the readings for Sunday proclaimed at the liturgy, since it is the parish’s Mass. I believe that the Creed was also recited. Furthermore, what the first rector did was to require that the Sunday readings be proclaimed for all wedding Masses celebrated after the Vigil Mass (especially, if the weddings occured during Advent or early Lent).

He also had a collection taken up.
