Now that I’ve happily retired, I’ve signed up for attending a weekly Bible study group that’s being held at our parish. During this morning’s study, it was recommended that each of us consider getting our own copy of the CCC. I’ve always read this online, yet wish to get a copy for my personal use. Goodness, after researching online, I’d no idea there were so MANY to choose from…! Can someone please recommend a CCC that might be helpful to a ‘novice’ studier…? Thank you…!

I can’t imagine a Catholic not owning at least one CCC. I have two at home and several copies here at work. I also found a copy of An Advanced Catechism used for higher grade of Catholic school which was printed in 1901. The little book is in decent shape for how old it is.

I happen to love these old books. Our priest is dismantling our old library which hasn’t been used in years and hasn’t been kept up. He has given me permission to go through and take whatever books I would like. I have found some treasures for sure. Probably not worth any thing to anyone, but I just enjoy them.

Which Catechism of the Catholic Church?

I live in Australia. If I was buying a Catechism of the Church Church some options I have from www.bookdepository.com are:

a. ISBN 1601376499, published 25 February 2020 by Our Sunday Visitor, paperback A$ 68.98.

b. ISBN 1784691062, published 22 April 2016 by Catholic Truth Society, paperback A$ 33.62

c. ISBN 1784691054, published 22 April 2016 by Catholic Truth Society, hardback A$ 72.30.

d. At www.paulinebooks.com.au I could get:

ISBN 9781876295356 with vinyl binding, A$23.95. I think this is an edition published in 2000.

Option a is the the most recent and has on the cover “Includes revision of paragraph no. 2267 promulgated by Pope Francis”. I do not expect the other options would have this. Options b and c have the 2010 translations of the liturgy like the Creed. Option d is cheapest but I doubt it includes the 2010 translation of the Creed.

.
I strongly recommend one with an extensive index in the back. One time I got one and found there was no index in the back at all–this made it hard to find what I was looking for in the catechism.

😱 I can’t imagine this being worth printing - it would be virtually useless. Who would do such a thing? (It’s surely a mortal sin! 😁)

My copy (which, granted, is digital) seems perfectly fine and current:
  1. What kind of punishment may be imposed?
The punishment imposed must be proportionate to the gravity of the offense. Given the possibilities which the State now has for effectively preventing crime by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm, the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity “are very rare, if not practically non-existent.” ( Evangelium Vitae). When non-lethal means are sufficient, authority should limit itself to such means because they better correspond to the concrete conditions of the common good, are more in conformity with the dignity of the human person, and do not remove definitively from the guilty party the possibility of reforming himself.
