Pax vobiscum!

I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for good Catholic wedding music from members on here. I am looking specifically for polyphony, chant, and classical hymns. Thanks!

In Christ,
Rand

From The Collegeville Hymnal:

#454 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
#404 May the Grace of Christ
#405 O Father, All-Creating

If the wedding will be at Mass, I would use a traditional Eucharistic hymn at Holy Communion, such as:

Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart)
Panis Angelicus (Franck)
Soul of My Savior
Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All

Pax vobiscum!

Give me some guidelines about what you have available in terms of musicians, instruments, and $$$. I can tell you that our wedding with the exception of “The Wedding Song” which was sung by DWs oldest friend didn’t have a single piece later than 1600. I actually had a lutenist in mind before MIL pitched a fit. She never realized that all of the rest of the music was Renaissance.

I had Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus during the prelude

Our Gathering was “How Great Thou Art”, but mine was also a mixed marriage, so we wanted to be sure to include something everyone would know (even my crazy pagan friends knew it)

I always loved the “Godhead here in hiding” for Communion (its the English version of Adoro te Devote).

As far as polyphony, find settings of the psalms that are prescribed for the rite of marriage: Ps. 145, 33, 148, 34. There are many good settings of those psalms for choir that would be appropriate for the weddging liturgy because they are the proper psalms for the sacrament. Check www.CPDL.org, allthough it has been down recently.

Hymn wise, again, you can turn to texts of the psalms or other texts. In the People’s Mass Book (WLP, 1984) there is a hymn “Praise the Lord, O Heaven’s Adore Him” to the tune “HYFRYDOL” (Alleluia, Sing to Jesus). This text speaks of praising God, and is a paraphrase of Ps. 148.

Communion might be the time to use a better quality Haugen-Haas kind of thing. The reason is that it would be good to have a simple, singable refrain that people can keep singing while they process to receive. Doing a hymn that speaks of Eucharistic adoration is not preferable as communion is not a time of adoration of the sacrament, but reception of it.

If you have a good choir, the following anthems in English are beautiful and appropriate:

“Arise, My Love, My Fair One, and Come Away” by Patrick Hadley

“Greater Love Hath No Man” by John Ireland

Pax vobiscum!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I’ll be looking into all of these (some I’m already familiar with and was thinking of).

brotherhrolf, the instrument I have available is an organ and the choir available is very talented.
