I’m teaching 10th grade religious ed in my parish. Most of the kids (about age 15) are cradle Catholics getting ready for confirmation. We’re using a text book that provides an overview of Catholicism, mainly written for those who have experience with the Church already.
But there is one girl who is a special case. Her mother is a long-time fallen-away Catholic who has recently reverted. (Her step-dad is in RCIA and her little sister is in our Catholic elementary school; they’ll both come into the Church next spring.) Ashley has virtually no experience with the Catholic Church. She has agreed to look at coming into the Church but the decision is being left to her.
There are some challenges. For instance, she’s been going on her own to a fundamentalist Baptist church for the last couple of years. I don’t think she’s been hearing any anti-Catholic rhetoric, but she did share with me that the Baptist services are a lot more exciting than she’s finding Mass.
Our pastor has asked her to come to my class mainly so she can socialize a bit with other Catholic kids in the religious ed environment but also as a part of a larger plan to start educating her in the fundamentals of the faith.
She’s really a great kid and trying to be very open to the Catholic message. She’s actually reading the text book (which is amazing, since most of the kids don’t), so I’d like to offer her some other evangelism materials aimed at the teenage level. Can you help with some suggestions?
