My children were Boy Scouts when young, and I was very happy with the program. Now it’s nearly time for my soon-to-be kindergarten aged grandson to become a scout, but times have changed. I read that girls can join Cub Scouts starting this fall. I think girls are great, but think boys need their own organization.

There are several scouting organizations: Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Scouts, Navigators, and others. There may be some connected to the Catholic church, though I don’t know.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a scouting organization?

I would not recommend the cubs scouts, only because it’s sort of useless for young kids and they don’t learn as much until they get into the Boy Scouts (around 6th grade). With the Boy Scouts, each Troop inside your specific Scout Council will be independent from one another. (I was lucky that I joined a scout-run troop, where the kids decided where to go, what meals they cooked, while the adults do the paperwork and cooked a lot better meals.)

I would recommend enrolling young boys in a scouting organization under the aegis of the Baden-Powell Scouts’ Association. Baden-Powell scour troupe tend to be more traditional, and they’re most likely exclusive to boys.

There is an organization called Troops of St George. It runs boys from 7 or 8 (i believe) up to 18. It is men only and the leaders are required to be the fathers or grandfathers of the boys in the troop. The troop Captain (senior adult leader) must be approved by a parish priest as an up standing Catholic. The requirements for the various ranks include the usual scout stuff plus Catholic knowledge. The basic equipment besides the uniform includes a rosary and a knife.

I used to be involved with Boy Scouting. I was a Life scout myself and an adult scouter for about 20 years. My youngest son made Eagle Scout. Then scouting changed. I was thinking of getting involved with Troops of St George but I have no scout aged boys anymore.

Check them out at

Thank you for the suggestions.
The Baden-Powell Association participated in the Gay Pride parade last year, behind the Dykes on Bikes contingent. It doesn’t look from their Facebook page as though they’ve done anything noteworthy since then.
Trail life looks good but has no Seattle branch.
I would consider starting my own but considering my conservative values, doubt I would get far. Also I’m not up to it physically.
Will keep looking.
