My discussion with another poster ended with his getting banned before this was answered. Let’s play along, shall we?

Please reconcile these verses: 2 Tim 3:16 with 1 Tim 3:14

2 Tim 3:16 is that all scripture is inspired by God and worthy for instruction

1 Tim 3:14 is that the Church of the Living God is the Pillar and Bulwark of Truth.

As an aside, do the moderators ban people or do they ban themselves by their actions, with the Mods being the judge? A little hell concept for us all.

1 Tim 3:14 is that the Church of the Living God is the Pillar and Bulwark of Truth.

1 is talking about how deacons should behave, 2 is talking about how to use the Bible. If you want to fit them somehow, I guess you can say deacons should be sincere and careful about teaching the Bible? I don’t get a clear connection here.

1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

I don’t see a connection between the verses, but they both strike me as very Catholic.

I should have been more clear. The quote from 2 Tim is often one of the verses for Sola Scriptura. IF that is the case, that the scriptures are all that we need, why is the Church called the Pillar and Bullwark (Ground in your translation) of Truth? How is the Church the Pillar and Bullwark if the Scriptures are all that we need?

A Catholic would see no issue. Scriptures should be used for instruction and the Church defends truth. I want to see a non-Catholic take on it. I know they use 2 Tim to support Sola Scriptura.

IF that is the case, that the scriptures are all that we need, why is the Church called the Pillar and Bullwark (Ground in your translation) of Truth? How is the Church the Pillar and Bullwark if the Scriptures are all that we need?

simple. the scriptures & gospels are the source of truth and since it is the church’s job to promote the truths of the scriptures then it serves as the ground and pillar of truth.

i suppose the roof is the truth itself. and the christians (church) are the ones supporting it from the bottom (pillar & ground of truth).
