I had watched this documentary last night, & I found it quite disturbing:

How do we reconcile the actions of Franco & the Church?

Are there other historical events/sources not addressed in this program that might shed light on this?

Thank you.

The Church cannot be reconciled to the evil actions of people whatever their source and whatever their excuse .

Evil is evil .

Rob2 is correct. Having said that, the side that opposed Franco also did many terrible things. It was a situation where there were two evil alternatives. Many good people were killed as a result and many Catholics were martyred.
We should pray for peace that such things never happen again.

Can I recommend an excellent novel set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, Winter in Madrid by C.J. Sansom? It’s very well written and thoroughly researched. He addresses the Church’s role in that period of Spain’s history in a fairly even-handed way.
