ok - I need the prayers, that’s true, but how about some great ideas for people recovering from knee replacement surgery?

I am still on pain pills, can only walk with a walker and am starting rehab tomorrow…off work until April…any ideas to help one grow spiritually during this time?

Ohhhh - I had a hip replaced 10 years ago (NOT fun) - and I’ve been told that knee recovery is even tougher! So, hang in there, take it sllooooww and easy, offer it up, pray, read, read, read, pray - and look forward to the day you can kneel again!

Best wishes on your recovery! I had back surgery about a decade ago and spent 8 weeks in recovery. I did a whole lot of reading and tried to offer up the pain and frustration. I came away with a sincere appreciation for those who are chronically ill, elderly or caring for those who are which stays with me to this day. As frustrating as the experience was–it was probably a gift to have received that insight and empathy as a young, otherwise healthy and active person–it has served me well over the years.

There is a website I’ve used when I’ve been immobilized. It’s called savior.org and there is a live webcam which captures Jesus in the monstrance of an adoration chapel in Philly. (Click on “Eucharist” at the top, then when it loads, click on the “see live image” on the left. Voila!) Sort of like attending adoration, though not being physically in front of Him–at least you can actually see Him. I have a laptop and I literally would just prop myself up and use the live image as a visual to help in my prayer. There is also a section for intentions, an order of sisters in Philadelphia who pray for all those who submit them. You might ask them to pray for your healing.

Aside from that, you might develop a prayer schedule for yourself. Maybe learn or get into Liturgy of the Hours to give your day rhythm. (LOTH is verrrrrrrrrrrry hard for me to have patience for.) Say the Angelus midday and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3pm. It might give you structure to your day which otherwise, while in recovery, sometimes the days start to run together and seem never-ending.

I’ll be praying for you! 🙂

P.S. I happen to love love love to read, so if it were me, I’d read like a maniac and join Netflix and rent every good movie I could think of. 🙂

Well, that gives you plenty of time to visit with us, and catch up on the Food Network!

I send my best wishes & prayers to you! 🙂

Here’s what I suggest - ENJOY your time off of work (I know surgery is nothing to get happy about, but at least you don’t have to go to work!!!) Hey, you could even visit with us!! I’ll keep you in my prayers. 🙂

I knew I could count on you guys. Princess Abby - the website is now on my toolbar.

I like the idea of deepening my prayer life with a ritual…I have always been intimidated by the Liturgy of the Hours but if there was ever a time to try it…

And you just might see me on this sight even more than before…!

Any other ideas? I did decide to learn Italian in preparation for my trip this June…

REST THE LEG.

I would have somebody get all the books I didn’t have time to read out of the library.

Still praying…

I forgot to mention this, but in case you didn’t notice–when you are on the page with the live image of Jesus, there is pull-down menu under the word DEVOTIONS. Click on it and you’ll find novenas and litanies and other stuff to aid you in your prayer while looking at His blessed image. 🙂

Hello:

I didnt have a knee replacement but did go thru a knee surgery so maybe i can offer a little help.

I had been in major pain for over a year before i would finally let some "quak with a knife open me up, but i had restrictions
I was wide awake and the spinal i had didnt leave me immobile
I had total feeling in my legs enough so that when a Nurse bumped my other leg during the surgery that i said oh sorry let me move that and did so.

what my problem ended up being was a severly torn miniscus which is basically the padding between the bones, it had flipped over onto itself 3 times cause my knee to separate a total of 5/8 of an inch on one side. Now relize I am also a karate Instructor so my knees are important.I was told after the surgery that I would most likely be walking on crutches for a week but was allowed to whenever i wanted I was the next day,I was told I wouldnt even be close to being able to compete in my national TKD tourney which was 6 months away well using my classes as rehab I competed in a karate tourney in March I had the surgery in January.
one of my karate moms her cousin is the DR whom done my surgery she was telling him what i was doing and it was relayed to me that he thought i was nuts before he did the surgery because i wouldnt allow any addictive pain meds and also refused prescriptions for anything stronger than Ibuprophen afterwards
but when he found out i was competing he then said he knew i was nuts, dont get me wrong my own form of rehab was not pleasant I “over did it” many times and the pain I had the first night after surgery ( surgery was late anyways) was worst pain i ever had,BUT very very controlable if i was resting my leg and foot perfectly i had zero pain, and that was only for about the first 7 hours afterwards. now a shot was used in the knee of some kind of temp pain relief to get me home and when it wore off i knew it. I was totally helpless and felt like the lowest person on earth, had it not been for my son I am not sure what i would have done. using crutches to move around was not a problem it was getting my sorry butt off the couch took two people including me to move my leg off without putting me thru the roof.
the next day I not only hobble walked without crutches but drove my stick shift truck (knee on left leg was one fixed)
Now i did let the DR talk me into some tylenol 3 pills i used a total of 3 and a total of 1 800mg Ibuprophen No i am not trying to show i am a big man, I have to be very careful about any meds i may take due to the competitions i was participating in some are very outlawed and ban you from competition for many years.
this was 2 years ago.
I am 40 at this point and knee is best it has ever been.
I am thinking about getting the other done next year only i will use a few extra tylenol3 s next time i no longer internationally compete…Now i was told during surgery that my knee was as separated for what i ended up having to have done as if i was getting a total knee replacement so the first night pain will be about the same.so maybe I would recommend a better pain reliever at least for that first night.a Nice rounded piece of foam rubber would also be good to place under your knee I used towels rolled but next time will use foam for comfort. I did get to spend a lot of time on my puter 🙂

as far as resting the leg goes use DR recommendations because as I tell everyone the faster you can get to using the better off you are.shortens rehab time if you have to go to professional rehab.

Good luck to you…
John

MIL had both knees done, a year apart, at age 84-85, is doing great, carries a cane for stability and reassurance, but is mobile and does everything she wants to do. Does not walk long distances, not more mall walking, prolonged shopping trips, but knees do what she needs. the only thing she takes is glucosamine and chondroitin, which she says helps a lot. she also wears good supportive athletic shoes with good arch support inside and outside the house. Good luck, we’ll be prayin’

Hi Leslie K, read good books and watch good movies. Contact your local library to learn how to check out books via internet and have book mobile drop them off at your house for you. You may want to pick a theme in reading like apologetics. Just a thought.

Leslie,

I will be praying for you as you recover. Perhaps God has sent this cross your way to become closer to Him.

Last night I watched Mother Angelica. She spoke about Jesus elevating the mundane as well as suffering to holiness. Your suffering and the mundane every day effort and motivation you will need to get better can be a daily prayer to offer to God for your intentions and the intentions of those you love.
