Hey guys.

What is the…
  • most EXHAUSTIVE
  • most AUTHORITIVE
  • most ACCURATE
verse-by-verse commentary, background/culture commentary, cross-reference index, topical index, etc. For the WHOLE Bible?

The most important to me right now is basically the best Catholic Bible commentary out there. But I guess you could just start giving me the “Best Of’s” for any genre you can think of within the realms of theology and apologetics. Commentaries on the Catechism, on Church History, Concordances, Topical Indexes, etc. I guess I’m just wanting a list of the most authoritive instruction books out there to accompany the Bible, Catechism, Code of Canon Law, Liturgy of the Hours, and Sacramentary. Again, my first concern is a verse-by-verse commentary.

See, I’m a bookworm and know all of these answers from a Protestant perspective. But now that I’m awaiting Confirmation I want everything to be solidly Catholic.

Oh, and while I’m at it, where can I get all the writings of the Doctors of the Church? Or is that even possible? Nothing condensed, please.

THANKS SO MUCH!!! 😃

Go to

www.ewtn.com

Then click on Religious Catalogue and go to “Books”

The have a pretty good section on bibles, bible studies, etc…

If you like the RSV CE… then the separate volumes of the Navarre Bible are pretty exhaustive…as long as you dont get the “Compact” edition. I believe ewtn also has the vols of Faith of the Early Fathers (I got those on my XMas list. 😉

I have also ordered books from

www.getfed.com

hope that gives you a starting point.

There really isnt a “All in one” Great Book out there… ya kinda have to build the collection…

You also may wish to check this book out… its called:

The Three-In-One Bible Reference Companion Super Value Edition. (Its an EXHAUSTIVE Concordance/Topical Index/Dictionary) I compared it side by side at Borders with Strongs…and as far as I’m concerned, blows Strongs out of the water… I used TWO themed words to make that assumption…Homosexuality and Abortion…NEITHER words or topics were in the Strongs issue I went thru. The 3 in 1 contains info and locations for the use of those words… it just rocks the way its laid out as well… at Borders its about $16…at Amazon…its just under $12.

Good Luck!

woah…the Three-In-One Bible Reference Companion Super Value Edition sounds waaaaaaaaaaaay cool. Does “value edition” imply there is an even more exhaustive one out there? And is it totally Catholic?

Is the Navarre Bible the best commentary? And does it cover every book of the Bible? What about for the Catechism or Church Doctors - are there commentaries for them?

About building a collection…that’s what I’m aiming to do here, with the help of this thread! 😉

Best comprehensive Church history:

History of Christendom Series by Dr. Warren H. Carroll, Ph.D.
The Founding of Christendom (to A.D. 324)
The Building of Christendom (A.D. 324-1100)
The Glory of Christendom (A.D. 1100-1517)
The Cleaving of Christendom (16th and 17th centuries)

Yet to be published by Dr. Carroll, volumes 5 and 6 in the same series:
The Revolution Against Christendom
[supposed to be published in time for Christmas this year]
The Crisis of Christendom
[5 years from now? Pray for Dr. Carroll, whose health is ailing, that he will live long enough to complete his work]

Dr. Carroll writes great, scholarly history books in a manner that read like a good novel you just can’t put down. Also, they are filled with literally thousands of footnotes that back up his premises, analysis and conclusions. He is a Catholic (convert from atheism), and presents the truth about the history of the Church that Christ founded, including the blemishes and bright spots across the centuries.

Dr. Carroll also founded and for some time was President of Christendom College.

I hope you have a chance to read and enjoy his books, which have been his labor of love for the past 30 years.

In the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

You can confirm this by asking Anawim in Catholic Outlook or CatholicConvert/Defenders of the Catholic Faith…

If my memory serves me, she earlier purchased New International [something] Commentary for Old and New Testament.

OldT is a set. NewT is a set.

Together, they are about $1000 plus shipping.

Christianbook.com sells them.
