My pastor has been names rector of our Cathedral. He starts in October. What is a rector and what do they do? I know he’ll be saying Mass there but that’s all I know.
A rector of a cathedral is essentially the pastor of the cathedral parish. His duties will be little different from the pastor of any other parish. Only the title really differs.

Different only based on the needs of the community he is serving. His basic duties remain the same, only at a different church and in a different community. A rector essentially is a pastor, but of a community based at a cathedral or a basilica rather than at a simple parish.

I never much cared for him but last night I was almost teary eyed at his leaving. I told him “goodbye” and he said not to say goodbye but “see you later”. I plan to attend one of his Masses.
