Reference threads are informative and largely uncontroversial threads intended to instruct others on common topics of discussion. Some examples of reference threads for Eastern Catholicism would be:

What is Eastern Catholicism?
Eastern Catholic prayers
What should I expect when visiting an Eastern Catholic Church?
How do you pray with an icon?
Recommended reading on Eastern Catholicism
Common Icons and their explanations

If you would like to see these or any other topics in reference threads on the Eastern Catholicism forum, please respond to this thread or write me a private message.

Dear Catherine,
Yes, I am interested to see RT here. I might be able to help. Shalom!.. Love Incarnate

Probably should have a thread each on Basic differences of each of the Eastern Rites: Constantinoplean/Byzantine, Alexandrian/Coptic, Antiochian, Syrian, Armenian.

One thing you could do is to contact your brothers & sisters from those non-Byzantine traditions in P/M’s and emails and try to coordinate at least one or two threads based on your traditions.

I’ve been attending a local Maronite Catholic Parish, and I find their Divine Liturgy to be beautiful and their people to be friendly and welcoming. I’m always awed and humbled to hear the words of our Lord chanted in the language our Lord used. and, There is something in their Liturgy that seems to take me and place me on the altar with the bread and wine that becomes “Christ our God”.

I can always provide links, but I can’t provie what it means to be an Eastern Rite Catholic. That can only be provided by someone who has lived as one.

I am an Eastern Rite Catholic and would be more than happy to try and answer any questions anyone might have.
My suggestion to threads though, because the questions could be repetitive and to keep responses ‘on track’ would be to title the question appropriately.

Although I don’t know enough about anything to write a reference thread there is one topic that could defiantly benefit from a sticky thread explaining it.

The Filioque

A thread simply outlining the history of the clause, the Eastern Catholic position (well, the Roman Catholic position really) and the opposing Orthodox position. If it covers all the bases in terms of what everything thinks of it without being to colored then hopefully we won’t get the normal 3-5 threads a week about it popping up on this forum.

Just an idea.
That topic is too controversial to be a reference thread. I would consider a thread with links to documents, statements, and books on the filioque, but even that would be unlikely to be approved. If someone has enough official teaching documents that are specific to the Eastern Catholic churches to create a 7 or more post thread, I would privately review it for inclusion.

So often on such forums the initial question was not answered and that forum gets off track. I hope I can help you.
Eastern Catholicism is no different than any other catholic in faith matters. We belive all the same (just maybe in some instances more intensely). our prayers are pretty much the same, our Mass prayers are pretty much the same. I’m an Eastern Catholic and I go to both churches because of where I live. My best explanation would be the Nationality of the particular eastern rite church you may attend.
If you were visiting an Eastern Catholic church you might expect:
  1. People are very quiet before the beginning of any service. There is NO talking, because people pray before any service.
  2. You will not be looked upon as odd if you genuflect or cross yourself wrong – many, many people visit or join Eastern Rite churches because they are welcome and free to pray any way they are comfortable. Depending on the church, you might be overwhelmed with the choir (gives you the chills). No music other than bells are used in Eastern Churches. You can expect a more “majestic” service.
  3. Icons: Our Icons are painted in a way to REPRESENT the saint, but to deter worshipping an idol. If you would see a full length Icon of say, Mary, not only are her eyes ‘not real’ looking, but she would be long and thin looking. The sole purpose for this is to REMIND us of the saint but that we do not WORSHIP that saint. (I have been in RC churches where I have seen women actually kissing statues - now, to me that is idol worship, but I cant see into their hearts). Praying with an icon is no different than praying with a crucifix. That crucifix is not actually Jesus on the cross, it is a reminder to you of Jesus on the cross.
  4. I would not delve too much into reading on Eastern Catholicism - I would rather see you go and EXPERIENCE it yourself. The faith is the same, the only difference is HOW God is praised. For example: the tabernacle is always FRONT AND CENTER, as after all the church is God’s house. The priest’s back faces the congregation. That is because he is no Officiating (God is), he is a celebrant and participant (like you and me).
  5. As mentioned before, icons are REPRESENTATIVE of the saint. In our churches we have an ‘iconostas’ which is the screen that represents the separation of the Holy of Holies from the general church. On that screen, usually on the great doors are the 4 evangelists. On the right is Jesus, on the left is Mary. Next to Jesus is John the Baptist, and next to Mary is St Nick. The ‘old style’ churches (which a lot of newly built churches try to replicate) have icons ALL OVER the church, the walls, the ceilings, the vestibule - everywhere. Again the icons are meant to inspire. If you wanted to do some reading on the Eastern Rite I’d recommend you read about the Eastern Rite saints. And we have many MODERN DAY SAINTS (I mean who have been martyred for the catholic faith in recent years). – a lot of people especially in the Latin Rite are not aware of present day martyrs in the Eastern Rite.
My daughter is an interior designer and for her thesis she wrote about Eastern Rite iconography. I took her to the ‘old style’ church for her to take pictures and such. And I am CERTAIN that if you should visit the church, ask the priest or a Holy Society member, that you can have a personal tour of that church and all your questions answered. Don’t be shy about that, people will line up to show you around.
I hope this information helps you. God bless you.

The poll shows overwhelming support for reference threads in Eastern Catholicism. If you have ideas for threads you would like to see or if you would like to volunteer to compose a reference thread on a topic of your choosing, please contact me or post here and we’ll get the ball rolling.

May God Bless You Abundantly,
Catherine
It seems that if you spend enough time on the forum you see the SAME basic questions asked again and again. People do come to this forum looking to find out the basics, so this should be facilitated in a more efficient manner

Within the next month, I plan to do an in-depth investigation into the original Greek of quotes from the Fathers regarding filioque. Would a simple list, sans commentary, of such quotes from the Fathers be eligible as a reference thread?

Humbly,
Marduk
I think I answered this via private message when it was asked. If not, please PM me.

Yes, I would like threads in Eastern Catholicism. My interests at this time is ecumenism, uniting all the Churches of Christ, especially the Orthodox churches and the Catholic churches. But among my Latin rite brothers and sisters I have not found very much enthusiasm, even in getting the Latin rite to talk from the pulpit about their Eastern Catholic sister churches. We cannot even think about uniting Orthodox and Catholic unless the Latin rite churches know something about their Byzantine Catholic sister churches! Let us begin by the Latin rite churches teaching who THE THEOTOKOS is.
The Latin rite knows KYRIE ELEISON very well but they do not know who lTHE THEOTOKOS is.
