Hello! I’m new to this website, so sorry if this is not in the right category.

I am a young adult who will be Confirmed this coming September. I wanted to reflect and pray about why I want to be Confirmed. I’m not truly sure of why I want to do it, just that I do. Does anyone have any reflection questions that would help me discern my reasons?

Thank you

Gabriella,

This is one of the questions that is often asked of confirmands. I’ve seen it as a required essay that the student must write and submit to the confirmation catechist team.

Let me ask you, then: what reasons do you think you might have, for wanting to be confirmed? I mean… we can’t tell you what you’re thinking, right?

Perhaps a good approach might be to sit down and research what the Church teaches about confirmation – what it does, how it acts in your life, etc, etc. Then, see what your reaction is: ask yourself “do I want X, Y, Z? Will I fulfill the obligations that confirmation brings? Do I want to practice my faith as a Catholic, in the way that confirmation points me toward?”

That sounds like it would be your answer to the question “why do I want to be confirmed?”…!!

p.s., welcome to CAF!

Look up the gifts of the Holy Spirit that you will receive in confirmation. Look up what each gift means. Then reflect on why you want to receive each, and how they will help you grow spiritually and become more holy.

Hi Gabriella, welcome to the forums.

Maybe you could go down a list of possible reasons why you might want to be confirmed, like a survey, and just check off any that apply and think about them. Here’s a possible list, you could make up more reasons if you wanted.

I want to be confirmed because…
  • I think it will make me closer to God
  • I want to more fully experience God/ the Holy Spirit through being confirmed
  • I want to feel the Holy Spirit working in my life
  • I want to evangelize others like the Apostles did
  • I want to join in the tradition of all the Catholics before me who were confirmed
  • confirmation will help me grow and mature in my Catholic faith
  • confirmation is another way for me to strengthen and affirm my commitment to the Church
  • confirmation is a sacrament that will give me grace to become more holy
  • confirmation will make me even more a part of the Catholic Church
  • all my friends are getting confirmed and I don’t want to be left out
  • people I admire or see as role models have been confirmed, and I want to be like them
  • it will make my family happy that I am confirmed
  • it’s expected by my parish or family that I will get confirmed and I don’t have any objection to it
  • confirmation is the logical next step for me at this time, on the road of living a Christ-like life
  • confirmation is another way for me to show God I love him
  • confirmation is something members of the Church just normally do
  • Other reasons (add your own)

Catechism of the Council of Trent explains the sacrament starting at p. 131.
First of all, your link’s broken, and second of all, she should be referring to the current Catechism or Youcat, not the old Catechism of the Council of Trent.
I’m sure whoever is preparing her for confirmation has already directed her to an appropriate catechism resource.

First of all, thanks. It worked when I grabbed it. I guess I’ll have to check it.

Second of all there’s nothing wrong with the Catechism of Trent, in fact just the opposite. Nothing in it is wrong. It’s quite informative and more reader friendly than the current catechism. What a strange attitude you’re portraying. I know you can be bossy at times but I find this just weird.

Edit: Link works fine.

It gave me a Forbidden error, twice.

If that’s a fisheaters link, they may still be having site problems.

Edited to add, just tried again and I’m still getting a “Forbidden, you don’t have permission to access this resource” error.

I was having problems with them the other day but this morning they seem to be working fine. Thanks for the heads up though. I’ll add a link to it from another site.

Thanks to all for answering! I appreciate it. I will keep all your suggestions in mind and pray about it 🙂

Everyone is different I suppose. To me, confirmation strictly obligates us to spread and defend the faith by both word and deed. I believe I became a defender since confirmation 🙂
