I wasn’t sure if this fits in Non-Catholic Religions or Apologetics because it deals with both.

I attended a Lutheran service this morning. I was there to take some photos for my newspaper for Reformation Sunday, the Lutheran holy day that marks the day Martin Luther saved everybody from the Catholic Church. It was an interesting service, which included a short play with two people dressed as Martin Luther and his wife, Katie.

Prior to the play, the pastor, who I have lots of respect for, sat down with some young children to explain what the day is about. They found out how the Holy Spirit came down upon Luther and gave him the courage to stand up for the Bible and against indulgences, how he “changed the way of thinking” as someone from the congregation said. There was some other misinformation through the service. Unfortunately, the pastor didn’t ask me if cared to make a rebuttal. 😃 I’ve done stories and photos for the church before and I believed she knows I’m Catholic, and this morning she noticed the papal crucifix I always wear on my jacket. Oh well, maybe next time.

What was ironic was the Gospel reading for today from Chapter 8 of the Gospel of St. John, where Jesus says, “The truth shall set you free.” As I looked around, I saw so much the need for evangelization and apologetical studies. The misinformation just gets passed on from generation after generation. The church even had a homemade poster on the front door that said, “Our 95 Theses,” with space to write. There were only a few, though one said, “No more indulgences.”

Throughout the service, all I wanted to do was pray for them, which is something I will do throughout this day. All Catholics should use this day to pray for those who need to know the truth so that they may be set free and welcomed into the Catholic Church.

It amazes me that Lutherans have a day to celebrate breaking away from the Catholic Church. I didn’t know this. It certainly is a shame that they would celebrate leaving the Truth behind. I’ll pray for them at Mass today.
 
Thanks for this interesting post. Now I will know to say special prayers for my husband’s family on Reformation Sunday. They are Lutheran and very upset that he is Catholic. You are “right on the nose” about misinformation being passed on from each gen.to the next. Unfortunately, with every generation they lose more and more of the origional faith. For example: My mother in law was angry when we were visiting and my 3yr old son wanted to inclue the Hail Mary in his bedtime prayer. She did not believe me when I told her that Luther had a devotion to Mary. She also thinks we worship the Pope.
 
Yes, it is sad. As they praise the great work by Luther, I see the chaos caused by it, with tens of thousands of denominations instead of all being part of the one, true Church.

Geeze, when I was in Lutheran Catechism, I always got the impression that the reformation was because “the church had gained too much power”. Then Luther tried to set things straight, and when they couldn’t agree, that is Luther and the “Roman Church”, they went their separate ways.
We celebrated Oktoberfest, but never Reformation day. We never considered the reformation as something “good”, but something that had to happen.
Well, now I think it was totally bad.

The service definitely showed how Luther freed so many people from the evils of Catholicism, called the “Roman Church.” When it comes to apologetics and evangelization, we have a very long way to go.
 
my husband was raised Lutheran, Missouri Synod. In his church they celebrated Reformation Day, but it was heavily tied into Halloween, and was mostly intended to give the children a positive, Christian way to celebrate the day. It wasn’t anti-Catholic like the Reformation Day service described above. However, it was still too “pagan” for some members of the church. My FIL was an elder for awhile and at one of the meetings, a man started ranting about the Reformation Day festivities. “Don’t you know they’re going to carve JACK O LATERNS??” he raved, “Don’t you know what people do with jack o laterns?? They worship them!!” This man left the Lutheran church shortly afterwards and started his own church, in his garage.

:rotfl: This is so fuuny! I wonder if his church’s statement of faith looks anything like this:

“Here at the Most Holy Church of My Garage we believe that God alone should be worshiped and never Jack o Lanterns.”

Funny yet pathetic at the same time.

Double sigh. Just goes to show that Catholics aren’t the only ones not aware (for the most part) about the Church’s history and heritage, its teachings and the basis behind those teachings. It’s sad.

I believe you mean Thesis #71, which reads as follows:
  1. He who speaks against the truth of apostolic pardons, let him be anathema and accursed!
I would like to thank you because you drove me to look up and read Luther’s theses and it definitely shows he didn’t have a problem with the TRUE doctrine of Indulgences but rather with the abuse of that VERY TRUE doctrine.
