Hi,

I am not sure if “Reformed Catholic” is the proper usage, but I attended a wedding over the weekend where the Bishop who administered the ceremony, was supposedly one of these. He was dressed in the traditional attire during the ceremony, and I did not realize his views were counter to church teaching until he said it was okay for unmarried men and women to live together before marriage. He called himself “Catholic” but was obviously some part of a sect? What type of group does this person belong too? I was offended how badly he represented Catholic clergy (how he dressed, talked, etc), even if he was not actually “Catholic”.

Thanks

BC,

If you can provide the name of the church (and city/town in which located) or of the “bishop”, I can likely tell you to which “Catholic Church” he belongs. There are a couple of “Churches” that style themselves “Reformed Catholic”, but my sense is that you just applied that term yourself, not that it was used by the “bishop”.

Lance,

Thanks for the link.

Neil,

I applied the term myself. He said that he was the “Bishop” of the Mid-Atlantic. The wedding we attending was in Leesburg, VA. That is all the information I have.

You might be talking about the church at this site.

If so they don’t seem to be in Communion with Rome.
Lance,

They most definitely are not. Thanks for posting the link, I hadn’t looked at their website in a while; they’ve broadened their circle since I looked at it last.

Brian,

I’m guessing the church to be “St. Athanasius”, as far as I can tell, that’s the only “independent Catholic” church in Leesburg itself. But, they don’t have a website and I haven’t been able to find them listed on the diocesan sites of any of the usual Old Catholic or Independent Catholic Churches; so, they may be a free-standing single entity, although what little I know of them would suggest they are a bit “traditional” for the “theology” the “bishop” was espousing.

“Mid-Atlantic Diocese” is a jurisdictional descriptor that is used by a couple of the smaller independent Anglo-Catholic/Episcopal Churches. (If he was just talking of the “Mid-Atlantic” as the region that his diocese encompassed, rather than the formal name of his jurisdiction, it gets much harder to narrow down.) Take a look at these two gentlemen and see if one of them is the bishop who presided:

Bishop Philip Zampino, Mid-Atlantic Diocese, Charismatic Episcopal Church

Bishop William McClean, Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States, Anglican Catholic Church

If not, you’ve stumped me  , unless you can get his name.

I’m pretty sure that no bishop of the CEC or the ACC would ever suggest that it was OK for unmarried people to have sexual intercourse. I know from Internet discussion boards a David Zampino who (last I heard from him) was a CEC priest and a grad student at Marquette. I wonder if he is the bishop’s son or related to him in some other way?

Greetings, Contarini,

Yes, that’s Fr. David’s father.

Fr. David is moving about these days.

Edwin & GKC,

I agree that the thoughts expressed by the “bishop” who presided at the wedding aren’t consistent with CEC or ACC thinking and actually thought I had suggested that. (In re-reading, I see that I suggested it only as to the traditional “parish” that I named). I apologize for any mistaken impression my post might have left as to the doctrines of either the CEC or ACC.

I posted links to the two hierarchs only because their Churches style their respective dioceses as “Mid-Atlantic” - the only “catholic-type” Churches of which I can think that do so.

Greetings, Irish Melkite.

Ok by me. We traditional Anglicans do have our problems, but, as you suggest, that sort of thing isn’t one of them.
