When her mother died at the age of nine, Blessed Mary Ann de Jesus took on the responsibility of caring for her five little brothers, and was mistreated by both her father and step mother. Her father sought to prepare her for marriage, yet because Mary Ann had chosen the Lord to be her spouse, she cut off her hair to successfully drive her suitor away.

However, she was not permitted to enter the convent of the discalced Mercedarians because she was afflicted by disease, and was allowed only to become a lay member of the third order.

Despite this, Blessed Mary Ann dedicated her life to the sick and needy, and received great spiritual graces, even experiencing intense suffering like that of Christ’s passion.
