Several days ago I received my quarterly newsletter from the Cistercian nuns at Valley of Our Lady Monastery.
This quarter they featured Sr. Mary Francis who is apparently a Cistercian Oblate. However, unlike her lay secular counterparts who live out their vocation in regular daily life, she is a regular oblate who is cloistered along with the nuns, has a religious name and wears a distinctive habit, but makes promises instead of vows of consecration.
Are there “Regular” Oblates or third order members of other traditions who are also cloistered? Is this only an option under the Rule of St. Benedict?
