My MIL is a Reiki master and a firm believer in mediums. I am a devout Catholic and not into the New Age Movement of any kind. I would like to find a nice way to challenge her thoughts and beliefs without offending.
Just this afternoon she was telling me about “John of God” the so-called healer from Brazil that is a medium who does surgery without anesthetics…I had seen him on tv last year and found the whole thing weird.
I find my MIL to be the type of woman with no conviction of her own and to follow the “next fad” that comes along.
Where can I find information that the Catholic Church teaches regarding mediums. My MIL made it a point to tell me that John of God is Catholic…
Thanks

Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another’s credulity.

God Bless
Peter

Thanks Peter, I will mark that in my Catechism for the next conversation.
God Bless!

yah the chatechism is pretty clear on that…but seriously, it is bad to do magic, as we know it. for instence, say that magic existed like in the world of harry potter…it doesnt…but say that it does. now, what is so wrong with how harry uses it? u know, not to kill when not acting in self defense…just like jinxes and protective things, to save peoples lives. ok, and if u use it like vlodemort…well thats obviously wrong.

Well, John of God is a crook, I’m willing to bet. All these “psychic surgeons” are just masters of the slight of hand. Oddly enough, I first read about this practice in a biography about Andy Kaufman. When you think about how these people, so desperate for a cure, are spending money on a bunch of a hocus pocus, what they do is down right criminial.

Hi

there is an excellent website which has links to the vatican offical web site, to do with reiki etc. If the link doesn’t work, then type in “Reiki and the catholic faith” in google search and then click on the first web page which is CUF.org, this makes it quite clear what the problems are of these things. here is the link if it works:
cuf.org/faithfacts/details_view.asp?ffID=200

God Bless you and you will be in my prayers.
