What are the teachings of Truth regarding competition through imitation? To progress, am I allowed to use ideas from others? For example, in a classroom setting, say someone I’m close to does something which I know garners a higher grade. is it ok for me to follow her “out of the box” example (to also get a high grade), or would that be considered copying (and is that frowned upon)? What do I do when faced with the prospect of rejection?

Are you beating around the bush and talking about cheating?

Or are you talking about one of those stupid things where the teacher asks “write a statement on bravery” and the “clever” answer “This is” and nothing else?

Just do the assigment. Don’t take shortcuts.

No, I am not beating around the bush regarding the issue of cheating, as I am thankfully not a cheater myself. Thanks for giving me that sound advice though, it’s actually something that’s luckily already been reiterated in me from a young age (as with you too, I’m sure).

I hope you can see what I mean through this scenario: Say your best friend gets an A+ on their project. You realize they got that A+ because they added images instead of just text. Is it wrong for me to add pictures to mine AS WELL to also get a better mark, or is that considered a “copying of ideas” and is that frowned upon by the Catholic Church?

I don’t see why adding pictures could possibly be wrong as long as you properly cite them.

What leads you to believe it’s wrong to do more work? On the contrary, we all should do more work. We should always try to do our best and to give glory to God in all we do.

🤨

Is adding pictures to a report a novel concept?

We all did it so we could make reports look longer than they actually were. 🤣 oooh and to add sources to our Bibs.

I think you are fine. Make sure they are relevant, well placed and well formatted and well cited. If it hasn’t been expressly forbidden, you’re fine.

Although I’m still scratching my head at the idea that having pictures in a report is some kind of innovation.

I am heartily sorry for the confusing answer! You really clarified things up for me though, and I guess I was just more concerned with the idea of what I thought was “copying” my best friends idea, rather than adding the pictures in itself (which was just a minor detail).

I agree that adding pics is definitely not something new, and I shouldn’t feel ashamed to do so - so long as the teacher hasn’t forbidden it!

Thanks for the great answer, and I wish you all the best! 👍

Good luck and God Bless!

The Catholic Church is fine with you doing anything that’s not breaking a commandment in order to improve your grades. As long as you’re not lying, cheating, plagiarizing, stealing, etc then if you want to imitate your friend’s techniques, go ahead, as long as you aren’t copying her paper.

Thank- you for your response! I guess I was just too preoccupied with what I thought was “copying” the methods of my friend, that I failed to realize that these were never her methods to begin with!

And I agree that this is what prevented me from achieving my full potential, and now I realize that I was only hindering my own self. Thanks for re-establishing in me the values that hard work is never in vain, and that it is ultimately in service of God, not man.

All in a days work!

God bless you, and I wish you all the best!

Wow thanks for the perfect answer!
That’s EXACTLY what I was looking for :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:!

God bless and all the best!

Nope, it’s smart. As long as you don’t take their same pictures. How do you think he/she got those pictures? They used a Camera which I’m sure they did not invent or make and then they used inspiration from other photos they did not take in order to come up with those photos they did take.

I hope this has helped 🙂

God Bless

Thanks for the nicely organized intellectual response! It really helped me 😊. I guess I really wasn’t looking at this from a logical perspective, and your response helped me reaffirm my forgotten belief that God is the sovereign Creator, and humans are simply the “do-ers.”

God bless to you as well, and good luck!

All the best!

haha, I wasn’t really thinking that far when I typed it, but yes your right, good observation. 🙂

The whole process of learning, is copying what others have done successfully and if possible building on it and as you picked up on, is all traceable back to God which has given us our intellect in the first place.

God Bless You

No.

This is the process that we call “sentient thinking” or “learning”.

You worry too much.

This is not a matter of faith or morals.

I’m not sure where you would get the idea that anything such as this would be “frowned upon” by the Church.

If you wear a brown shirt because your friend wears a brown shirt, that is not a problem. if you improve on an assignment or idea because you’ve been inspired by an idea or action of another, that is not a problem.

Thanks for the insight 😉 I’ve gotten that compliment a lot! 😂

God Bless and all the best!

Thanks for response and clarity in your answer!

May God Bless you :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
