Good morning,

I am currently attending RCIA sessions, and I’m looking forward to being received into the Catholic Church during Easter Vigil.

Having been an evangelical Christian and member of several denominations over the years, I have quite a few friends who don’t understand why I am converting to Catholicism. My family members, mostly Baptist or non-denominational, likewise seem confused. Most of these family members and friends, while not exactly supportive, accept what I’m doing. Still, they don’t really want to talk about it. Also, a couple of them are somewhat hostile towards the Catholic Church.

I’ve shared with a couple of people who seemed interested in talking, but I’m not one to debate my faith.

I would appreciate feedback about how others who have converted relate to family and friends who don’t understand or don’t want to deal with the situation.

Thanks!

You have a reason for becoming Catholic? Right? I just stated that it was the historical church when I was asked. But for the most part I avoided my Evangelical acquaintances which wasn’t hard because almost all of them stopped speaking to me once I announced I was leaving that church. One family still speaks to me and is full of bad information about the Catholic Church.:doh2:

I had one relative, not Evangelical, who had a hard time with my converting, but this person came at 5:30 am and saw me received into the Church.

My advice is to keep up the relationships with your family and friends and accept that you may have to agree to disagree. Make friends with fellow Catholics who can support you. If people in your life see you are happy in your faith, they may come around.
