Relics, Scapulars, and Medals

Can anyone tell me about relics? What purpose do they serve in the RC faith. Are they like “electric rods” in the sense in that they applify the Faith that is already in you, like Scapulars or Miraculous Medals? What can I tell people who don’t understand scapulars, medals like the Miraculous, and Relics?
