Incidentally, I was rather stunned by this in the article …
“It’s probably no coincidence that Mississippi is also one of the few states with constitutions that prohibit atheists from serving in elected office.”
I wonder how that is even possible in our modern world and how long it can last.

I must be ignorant, but I did not realise that states could so deviate from what would seem the mainstream American values.

Would appreciate any thoughts on this … Also if other states have anything similar.
 
I think there are seven states where such laws exist. They’re completely unenforcable ofcourse, due to article VI of the constitution. That doesn’t stop some people from trying though: In 2009, writer Cecil Bothwell was elected to the city council of Asheville, North Carolina. Some of his opponents tried to stop him by invoking North Carolina’s ban on atheists holding public office.
