Once I read a letter in the National Catholic Reporter of all places answering this question. “What’s the sense in going through the novitiate and taking vows if you’re just going to live like a secular? You might as well BE a secular.”
 
It’s probably because you don’t see religious sisters take an active role in the Church anymore. No one is aware of what they do; even if you do have religious sisters they look like lay people & you can’t tell that they belong to any order.
 
After reading the reply of post # 2, I guess we now know why reading the National Catholic Reporter, is not such a good idea. Believe me, it will lead you to error. I would suggest the National Catholic Register as a highly preferred alternative, that if strictly orthodox and conservative.
