As I am exploring religiuos orders are there any for women in which they could work in clinics or be ER doctors? I have such a passion for emergency medicine and I have hard time seeing myself do something else. I am not there yet, still have to get into med school. I know the Daughters of Charity have a doctor or 2.

Thanks

Yes! There are the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Alma, Michigan who work as both doctors and nurses! They also send their sisters to medical school! 🙂 I would definitely recommend that you visit their webpage and if you feel compelled, send them a letter. I wrote one a while back to learn more and the information I got was incredible. I am not called to them, but I hold them in high esteem!

Please let me know if I can help you find any other orders.👍

The call to work in emergency medicine (and a valuable vocation it is!) is NOT the same thing as a call to be a nun or sister or other religious.

When Sr. Luke in THE NUN’S STORY said she wanted to be a good nurse, her superior told her, “First, be a good nun.”

Yes, but you can be both. I’m called to be a nurse and a Sister, but a Sister first.🙂

Well, there are the Medical Missionaries of Mary,
Religious Hospitaliers of St.Joseph, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word here in San Antonio,Tx.
Sisters of Misericorde who care for pregnant women and children.
There ia a french sisterhood,Sisters of the Catholic MaternityThey do much the same.
Daughters of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Daughters of the Holy Ghost.
Little Workers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Franciscan Hospitialier Sisters of the Immcaulate Conception, and other communities.

Sounds like some quality time with Google is in order, ma’am. There are many, many religious communities of women who run hospitals. God bless your search for the right community.

I didn;t want women who just run hospitals but an order in which women can be doctors in clinics or ERs. THanks for all of those that replied. I was feeling very drawn to being a sister but that desire has recently faded. I think I was drawn to it for all the wrong reasons. Please continue to pray for my discernment.

That happened to me once. I originally started discerning after meeting the Sisters of Life and the Franciscans of the Renewal and hearing the call myself. I began to think I was delusional and that I was mistaken. Plus, how could someone like me get called to religious life? I decided to forget about it and focus on my schooling to become a veterinarian. I didn’t think much about it, but then I started talking to a friend, and she is a candidate for an order. For some reason, I thought, “I was so happy when I was discerning.” So I looked at the order that she was a candidate for and found myself drawn to them. That’s when my discernment restarted and I prayed a lot in front of the Blessed Sacrament and making a schedule to go to Mass daily and pray everyday. I have since changed my plans to be a veterinarian and realigned them with what God is calling me to be–a nursing assistant, and eventually a registered nurse. I went to visit the Carmelites that my friend is candidate for. I didn’t feel called there, but something about the order really meant something to me. Now, tomorrow, I am visiting a different province that does much more nursing, but it’s the same order!

If God means for you to be a Sister, He’ll get your attention again somehow. I remember how I came back home from the convent convinced I was romanticizing everything too much and it wasn’t for me. But I didn’t give up. I felt called to discern more deeply and I looked into the cloistered orders to understand how much of a sacrifice it is. It was a great reality check for me.

I’ll be praying for you. Don’t think that this is the last step, because you’ll be surprised. God bless you. :crossrc:
