Is anyone aware of any women’s religious orders that have parish work as one of their primary apostolates? The main one I am familiar with is the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus in Minnesota, but I’m wondering if there are others.

There are likely several that do parish work and don’t necessarily claim that as a “primary apostolate” as you termed it. For instance, there’s a Benedictine monastery nearby where the sisters frequently engage in parish work, but it’s not mentioned as part of their charism or major ministries. It is mentioned on their website, but almost as a passing remark. We also have Sisters of Providence in our area, and a fair number of them also do parish work - but it isn’t exactly “advertised” that they do; the parish work is how they carry out the ministries they’ve identified (and so you’ll have to read between the lines, so to speak, when you’re learning who they are and what they do).

The Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate are a community that’s been around for a century and does this ministry. (Fun fact: The Sisters of Life did part of their initial formation with the PVMIs.) https://parishvisitorsisters.org/

So do the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart in Maryland. Again, they’ve been around more than a century. https://www.missionhelpers.org/

Most communities these days have sisters who are parish ministers. But these two specialize in that.

There had been a few domestic congregations in Canada, the Sisters of St. Joan of Arc; the Little Sisters of St. Joseph; and the Antonian Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Clergy, and a very small congregation of Queen of the Clergy sisters here in our diocese (Charlotte, NC), but I’ve not heard anything about any of them lately. I had discerned with the Sisters of St. Joan of Arc when I was in college.

The Mary Vale Sisters as the Queen of the Clergy Sisters in North Carolina are still around. They have a kindergarten or day care and still around. The Our Lady of Victory Sisters I think are still in San Antonio. The Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence have a mother house in San Antonio. The Missionary Servants of St.Anthony in San Antonio do parish work, and have from the start. They were founded in the 1920s or 30s, to work with the families employed by the Alamo Quarry. These people lived in Cementville, as it was known. That whole area is now the Alamo Quarry Market Place in San Antonio. The Mercadian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament on Cevallos St.here do parish work. There is also the Guadalupana Catechist Sisters here who do the same.

That’s the Queen of the Clergy ARE NOW KNOWN AS Mary Vale Sisters on June Bug Road.

Oh, I also forgot the Sisters, Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ here in North Texas…
They also do parish work.

I highly, highly recommend the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate
