I have trouble remembering God, and the Ten Commandments throughout the day. I also forget to pray until I pray the rosary (which I often forget to do until 8:00 at night.)

How can you remind yourself to pray, and remind yourself to follow the ten commandments? I find this very difficult, as I have a particularly bad memory.

Well, I try to always keep times in the morning, afternoon, and night to pray. God knows your heart and that we are weak, forgetful human beings, so don’t fret too much about it. Just do your best to remember, and maybe leave yourself notes. It will come naturally after a while of getting yourself into a good prayer routine each day that fits your own personal spirituality.

May God bless you abundantly and forever! 🙂

Prayer is a habit, and as such, it has to be formed. The best way to form it is to always set aside time at a specific period each day. 🙂

Throughout the day, you could make use of ejaculations.
  • Jesus, I love you, possess us.
  • O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!
  • Heart of Jesus, burning with love for me: inflame my heart with love for Thee.
  • Eternal Father, I offer Thee the precious blood of Jesus in satisfaction for my sins, and for the wants of holy Church.
  • Mary, Mother of God and Mother of Mercy, pray for me and for the departed.
  • O Heart of Love, I place all my trust in Thee: for though I fear all things from my weakness, I hope all things from thy mercies.
  • Holy archangel Michael, defend us in battle, that we may not perish in the tremendous judgment.
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy kingdom come!
  • Sweetest Jesus! grant me an increase of faith, hope, and charity, a contrite and humble heart.
After you are baptized, and thus have faith, hope, and charity infused into your soul, cultivating prayer will become much, much easier.

Some stuff is habit. I try to remember to pray the minute I wake up, to give God thanks for keeping us safe through the night. I try to remember to say grace before every meal. I have an actually alarm set on my phone for 3pm (hour of mercy) and if I have an opportunity I will pray the Divine Mercy chaplet or the Stations or other prayers during that hour. At minimum I try to focus briefly on Jesus’ Passion. I try to read the daily readings before bed. I get the Magnificat magazine so I just try and read that day’s section. And I pray a Rosary nearly every night these days. I guess mostly it’s just like anything else, you try to develop good habits and stick to them. My weak area is to pray before I fall asleep- I often forget. I need to work on that.

Read The Way of the Pilgrim if you can find it.

You might gain some insights.

That’s about the best question there is. I’ve been pondering it for years. Making a habit of prayer in the morning and the evening is the best method I know of. What seems to happen is, after a while of having a prayer practice like that, it begins to feel so peaceful and good that you begin trying to find ways to extend that feeling for longer and longer periods of time. Like, when something really negative happens, say, a teacher yells at you or something, then that feeling will vanish. You’ll have some kind of angry thought in response to getting yelled at, and then that sensation is just gone. The goal is to gradually get stronger and stronger at the practice, so that, with time, you won’t be thrown off by daily trials and tribulations so much, and eventually your whole day becomes suffused with that peaceful feeling. I apologize if that didn’t make sense.

You would definitely find Brother Lawrence interesting, too, because he asked exactly the same question, and after wrestling with it, by slow degrees he became a very holy person. Try searching for “Practicing the Presence of God.” There are some audio books online, too.

I also recommend The Unvarnished New Testament, because it’s a highly readable translation of the New Testament. It feels almost like you’re reading a novel, which is useful because it engages your imagination and daydreaming, and you just naturally find yourself thinking of it during the day.

I share everything with God, every moment, every thought, every action.

Would a small token, rosary, relic, prayer card, etc. help?

What has worked best for me, is to stop trying to recite prayers and instead just talk to God throughout the day. When I find myself arguing in my head with someone, I stop and discuss it with God instead. When I find myself working through a problem, I stop and become mindful of doing it with Him.

It takes a while to develop this habit, but I think you will soon find yourself including God in your everyday thoughts.

Also, one of the BEST things is to develop gratitude. Set a goal of seeing one “little blessing” each day - it can be a kindness someone does for you, it can be a beautiful sky, it can be hearing a child’s laughter - anything at all. Take note of it and thank God for it, and soon you will be noticing those blessings more often and you will be giving thanks to God for them.

These are ways that have helped me to develop a habit of bringing God into my everyday thoughts - a sort of “pray without ceasing.”

Good luck and God will bless you for your efforts! 👍

Great question to think about. At mass Jesus cries out “do this in remembrance of me”. Holy mass will always give us the graces we need to remember God as he always is one with us.
In a relationship with someone we love for me God, there is a oneness in the heart with the beloved. Creation all that God has made also reminds me about God --king of creation. Mary queen of creation also will help us to remember God.

Sometimes I think the times we are living in is like Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane – he is left alone in his agony – even his best friends fall asleep while he says can’t you stay with me for just one hour? Jesus is forgotten so many times – right after mass – right after receiving him Catholics run out of mass at least here in the USA they do, don’t even spend a few minutes thanking God for being within them. Then he is left alone so much in the tabernacle and in churches – some places even lock their churches-- I guess that helps people in charge begin to close them too.

I have a problem when I pray the rosary, or a set of prayers: I always just rush through it, and keep thinking of other things. Either that, or I keep yawning (if it is late.)

How do you keep concentrating on prayers, and not think of what you will do after praying?

👍 Good advice!

Make work a prayer. Even the most mundane tasks and chores are prayers if the proper intentions are made and work is completed properly and thoroughly.

Pray that God may remind you. Mention your lack of memory and ask that He may remind you. God a humble and contrite heart you will not spurn, Amen.

You have received some wonderful advice on what to do and how to do and what to read. I would like to help with why we pray. It is because we love God, He who loves us so much, He gave His Son to die for for us so that we may be with Him for eterntiy. Everything we do and see each day should remind us of that love and of God. The sunrise. The crisp morning air. Each day clouds are different. Where I live (rural area) the air smells different depending on how the winds blows. I love when I catch a wisp of seabreeze.

He had a hand in everything we see and feel and smell in creation. It shows me how much He loves us and how much I have to be grateful for 🙂
