This is a watercolor I used as our Christmas card in 2015. It was inspired by our trip to the cathedral the year before. Words fail me right now.

The good news is it’s still there, for the most part. It will continue to give us many more good memories.

We’ll just have to bring our umbrellas to mass. Sunglasses too.

Here’s a watercolor by one of my favorite artists, Thomas Schaller.

Years ago at 23 - like so many other students of art and architecture- I made the pilgrimage to Paris. Notre Dame Cathedral was my first and my last stop. I visited every day. And it changed everything for me - how I looked at art and culture - at architecture and context - at religion and politics - at humanity and time. Beauty was too pale a word. In fact, no words would suffice as I sat there for hours in that ethereal and gently shifting light. Only silence - or the voices of angels - would do. This is the first painting I did way back then of Notre Dame - so long ago.

And another quick sketch by my friend and fellow teaching artist, Judy Nakari
