Happy Easter everyone! I have a question about the renewal of baptism done during the Easter season. I attended the Easter vigil mass and of course the priest walked around the church and sprinkled water on everyone in the congregation as a sign of baptismal renewal. I went to church again last night for divine mercy Sunday and the same priest was there and he sprinkled the congregation again. Why is this done twice? Is there a specific reason?

Thanks

A ‘sprinkling rite’ (which is something distinct from a ‘renewal of baptismal promises’) may take place throughout the Easter season, as per the Roman Missal. In its ‘Appendix II’ (Rite for the blessing and sprinkling of water), the Missal states:

“On Sundays, especially in Easter Time, the blessing and sprinkling of water as a memorial of Baptism may take place from time to time in all churches and chapels, even in Masses anticipated on Saturday evenings.
If this rite is celebrated during Mass, it takes the place of the usual Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass.”

On the other hand, a ‘renewal of baptismal promises’ takes place at the Easter Vigil Mass, and may also take place at Mass on Easter. From the Missal, #72 of the section ‘Sunday of the Resurrection’:

“The Creed is said. However, in Easter Sunday Masses which are celebrated with a congregation, the rite of the renewal of baptismal promises may take place after the Homily, according to the text used at the Easter Vigil. In that case, the Creed is omitted.”

Can an individual do a renewal of baptismal promises? In private with a priest or
deacon?

You can renew your Baptismal vows everyday if you wish, and you do not need a Cleric. If you wish to do a family renewal, then simply do what they do at Mass: one ask the questions (usually the father or mother) and the children respond accordingly, and then the leader blesses himself and his family with holy water.

If you wish to do it privately, you can do so by following this formula

👍 Thank you for the last link. That is exactly what I was looking for.
