I just had a question about renewing our wedding vows in a church by our priest. We will be married 12 years this August, and in 2007 my husband had an affair that I discovered in September of 2008. We were married in a Catholic ceremony.
It was a struggle, but we have reconciled and our marriage is better than it has been in a long time. He is very sorry for what he did, and he has confessed, but I know he still struggles with guilt although he won’t talk about it. As for myself, although I have forgiven him and love him deeply and more than ever, I have a hard time with the fact that he broke our vows - almost as if our marriage was tainted, and those vows we said on our wedding day need to be reaffirmed to me and to God. Almost like a fresh start, a new beginning is needed.
So that is why I want and need to do this. I saw a previous post where someone said that this doesn’t need to be done because the vows to not expire. But I feel in this case, when those vows are broken, they sorta do.
I want this to be a private thing – not what I see some people do with inviting guests and having a party. I want it to be personal and intimate and spiritual. I realize this can be done outside o the church, but it is important to me that it be done in the church because it is a sacrament and where it should be done. Does the Catholic Church do this? If so, how do I go about doing this? I haven’t mentioned it to my husband yet because I want to have all of the information first.
