I was going to originaly post this in the media thread but I figured it would probably be better suited here.

I hear it’s a very good broadway musical from a few of my friends that have seen it. It’s also out in theatres or something like that now to. But a local high school in my city’s field trip to see the movie has been postponed because some parents are protesting because they claim it “glorifies homosexuality”. You can see a somewhat more fuller article here:

As you can see the article that spurred it was written by a Christian group, that does not surprise me in the least bit.

Have any of you seen either the broadway show or the movie? If so what do you think of it? I heard it even brought one of my tougher friends thats a boy to tears in the end.

yeah. it really does.

I liked the movie but i was VERY uncomfortable at many parts becuas eof how in your face the homosexuality was.

Its odd, you really feel for the people and all the stuff that is happening. but at the same time there is a “its just so wrong” vibe coming from all the sexual stuff, drug use (though that is condemed), etc.

This is story is an accurate portrayal of what living in that part of New York City was like, this is life as the playwright experienced it. He’s simply being honest.

sorry i failed to mention that i loved the movie. Its just some parts made me feel uncomfortable.

I’ve seen the stage musical, and I totally agree with those parents who are protesting it. It does glorify homosexuality as well as disrespect for all authority and is not suitable for a high school field trip. That said, I think it offers interesting character development and pretty good music, and the overall emphasis on loving your neighbor is good. Fortunately, I can find interesting character development, good music, and an emphasis on noble values in works that don’t contain morally objectionable content and themes. A critically thinking adult shouldn’t necessarily be afraid of seeing it for its artistic value, but I can see that they might have a problem financially contributing to it.

I saw the movie and loved the music as well as the raw emotional anguish portrayed. It is definitely not for impressionable young adults though.

Homosexuality is definitely condoned. In one musical number, they even mock conservative men in suits and sing about the glory of the bohemian lifestyle. And there is tons on guy-guy and girl-girl kissing.
