Our Lord revealed to St. Mechtile and St. Gertrude the Great different ways of pleasingly offering up reparation for the great number of sins that occur on this day before Lent begins.

As revealed to St. Mechtilde:

At the time of the Carnival Mechtilde macerated her flesh till the blood flowed, offering this slight reparation to her Well-beloved for all the excesses and wickedness of the world. And our Lord, several times, said He loved to rest on Mechtilde’s heart, where He could forget the pain caused Him by other hearts.

It was the Sacred Heart just as Margaret Mary was to know it.

One day our Lord appeared to Mechtilde as though suspended, with hands and feet tied, and said to her:

*“Every time a man sins mortally he ties Me thus, and as long as he perseveres in his sin he keeps Me in this torture.”
*
He had already complained of being so ill-treated in His Church. Three things particularly grieved Him: the clergy did not study the Holy Scriptures in the right way, but made to contribute to their vanity; Religious neglected interior things and gave all their attention to things exterior; the people took no care to hear the word of God nor to receive the Sacraments of Holy Church.

Mechtilde asked our Lord to teach her how she could offer satisfaction to Him for the many members of the Church who at this time (it was Quinquagesima Sunday) showered so many insults on Him. Our Lord replied:

“Say 350 times the anthem: Tibi laus, tibi gloria, tibi gratiarum actio, O beata Trinitas! – ‘To thee be praise, to thee glory, to thee thanksgiving, O blessed Trinity,’ in reparation for all the indignities offered Me by those who are My members.”

Good entry.

The idea of maxing out on sin just before Lent is rather sad, anyhow.

It misses the point.

Thank you for sharing this. It helps. Slowly the Holy Spirit has been nudging me in the area of making reparation in different ways.

May your Lenten Journey be fruitful to our Lord,

Friends of mine, who are not Christian, went to the Madi Gras every once in a while. Then back in 1998, they went and were so disgusted with what they saw, that even in their liberal view points, left early and said they’ll never go back.

The said it was nothing more than a gay and transgender celebration with profanity beyond imagination.

The Catholic Church has separated herself from the Madi Gras a long time ago.

I respectfully disagree with those criticizing Mardi Gras. My family and I are from New Orleans and have celebrated for many many many years! My husband and sons ride in a krewe and my daughter and I ride in a different krewe. The parade is filled with families and the celebration is joyeous! Families gather on the route with food, ladders, drinks- and the kids love the beads and toys that are thrown. Obviously, many not from New Orleans have a skewed idea about the carnival season, and many tourists go to the Quarter to drink heavily and misbehave. But for locals, it is a time of family celebration before the somber period of prayerful reflection that is Lent.

The Quarter is what people are referring to here when they speak of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The only time I was there, a friend of mine said that if God was going to destroy the world, he would start right there.

Certainly parade routes along St. Charles and in Metairie are more “family” friendly (if you want to call it that), along with New Roads, Baton Rouge and even Pensacola. The fact is, though, that the Catholic aspect of Mardi Gras evaporated a long time ago.
