Reparation for sin

Hi,
I’m struggeling with how or if I should be making reperation for sins I have commited when I was kid. There were three people that I said some nasty things to when I was in junior high and the recollections of what I said to them are coming back to me. I’m in college now and don’t know where these people are. How should I go about making reperation for my sins? A priest told me not to go out looking for these people but if I were to ever see them to apologize up front to them face to face.

Could someone please help me?

Assuming you followed what the priest told you the first time you confessed, you have had the good advice of your priest, and nobody on this forum has the right to expand on it or second guess him.
 
Several times I have gotten bad advice from priests. I don’t see why a forum member couldn’t help me out and explain to me what I should do in my situation.
 
I’ll offer my advice. I see no reason why you need to seek these people out either - however seek away if you feel you must.

Here are some ideas for reparation of sins:
  • What about adding a day of fasting for reparation of sin.
  • How about abstain from something you really enjoy - just as you would do in lent?
  • How about adding to your prayer life, adding a weekday or Sat mass, saying the rosary for the intention of these people you have sinned against?
  • What about saying a novena for these people?
It sounds as if you really want to do something over and above your penance. There are so many ways to do this - BUT THEN MOVE ON and leave your sin behind you. It has been forgiven and to dwell and meditate on it is not what the Sacrament of Penance is all about. The sacrament is to bring healing and peace.

If the priest gave bad advice he will answer for it, not you. I’ve done the similar things when I was young and I wince everytime I remember the wrongs I did. I’m not sure there is anyway to get rid of the feeling of shame totally. Is it possible that the shame is temporal punishment? Rest assured you are forgiven.
