If I can not stop sinning, should I stop taking communion.I cannot stop the Impure thoughts and actions. I go to confession monthly sometimes more. But within days of confession I fall again. So maybe I don’t want to change. I am nearly fourty and cannot stop this sin. I all ways fail.

I suggest that you speak to a priest about this. I have no idea if you should stop receiving Holy Communion at this point. Obviously if you know that you are in a state of mortal sin, you can not receive the Holy Eucharist. Do you know the difference between mortal and venial sin?
I can tell you that the greatest defense against temptation is the following: attending daily Mass, praying the Rosary daily, going to confession at least twice per month, performing acts of charity, renewing your consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on a daily basis, and praying in reparation for not only your sins, but for the sins of others that so greatly offend God. Fasting and praying the Stations of the Cross is also important.

try to go to confession weekly, trust me even if you dont have many sins to confess the grace you receive form the sacrament and getting it once a week is a BIG help

The Sacraments are the most critical element in combatting habitual sin. Refraining from Communion, unless your in a state of mortal sin, would be the least effective route. Our Lord will not abandon a soul that is striving to overcome habitual sin. Satan, on the other hand will do all in his power to discourage such a soul from persevering.

Hang in there!

It seems to me that you’ve formed a habit or an addiction to a particular course of behaviour. To that end you might be said to now be lacking the full consent in the actions since it is the addiction controlling you rather than your will.

May I suggest a few practical means by which you can attempt to beat the habit?

Not least would be the recognition that you actually have an addiction and take that to God. Self awareness is one of the tools which we can use to help heal ourselves.

You mention ‘sins of impurity’. I think most of us will know what you’re talking about (and those of us who seem not to are probably embarrassed to admit it!).

One of the ways of breaking a habit is to remove the enablers for it in our lives. Have you found that a substantial change in your routine makes you less prone to falling? To that end, change your lifestyle. Change your habits at home.

If you are using impure materials, rather than just your imagination, then get rid of them. If you are using the internet, install blocking software or have your ISP put automatic ‘parental controls’ on your account (if they do it). If your computer is the route to impure materials and you live in a family environment, if the computer is in a private area: move it somewhere public where you wouldn’t want others to see what’s on the screen. If you live alone, move it out of your bedroom. Never let it in there again. Make that area a holy space, designed for being at one with God (and your wife, if you’re married). Cultivate the habit of commending yourself to the care of the saints and the angels at bedtime. Place a crucifix at the FOOT of your bed, where you can see it (many people will traditionally have it on the wall behind them, and out of sight can sometimes mean out of mind).

Listen to calming music before bed. Set aside a specific time for it every night. Maybe even go to sleep with it on in the background. Try something gentle. I find Early Music from groups like Anuna (an Irish choral group first heard on Riverdance) very restful and, importantly, many songs are religious in origin. You will know which music works best for you.

Above all, rely on the mercy of God. Please don’t fear Him just because you are in the midst of your weakness. He just wants to help.

Just because you are nearly 40 (hey, we have something in common!) means nothing. Nobody is too old to change. Nobody is too old to ask for help. Nobody is too old to receive the Grace of God. Nobody is so old that should either feel abandoned or abandon themselves. And 40 isn’t even remotely old.

You will be free of this.

I would agree you need to go to confessiion on a weekly basis for awhile. I’m having a problem with language and using the Lord’s name in vain, and have been going to confession weekly for a couple months. While I still fail, I’m doing so much better and Father has really given me a lot of help and encouragement. It get’s kind of old repeating the same sin every week, but I have gotten a lot of help from Father, plus by going weekly it cuts WAY down on your other sins which is nice.

One thing Father told me when working through my swearing issue is don’t slip up and throw in the towel, if you slip up try and return to your state of grace and keep working on it, it’s really helped me, and while I still fight these times of using bad language, they are becoming much fewer and farther in between.

My advise, Go to Confession Weekly!

toni2008, I also battle impure thoughts and other temptations of impurity. It is a struggle, but with God’s grace we can win! I think God is most disappointed in us when we just give up. As others have recommended weekly confession, prayers, the Rosary, etc. I know it can become discouraging going to confession and confessing the same sins over and over again. Take heart and don’t let yourself fall into despair and give up!

I have been battling this for a while now and I can see small progress, Talk to your Priest and I am sure he will have some good recommendations about battling this. If you are truly trying to quit, confession and communion will help you with your struggle.

Remember we are all sinners and each and every one of us struggles with temptation and many times we will fall. It is only through getting back up and trying again will we ever be successful.
