If a couple chooses sterilization but repents and continue to have intercourse is that a sin? Can the confession of the sin of sterilization forgive the current sin of contraceptive intercourse? It seems they are having their cake and eating it too.

A valid confession forgives all sin. The couple may maintain normal marital relationships as this is their state in life given their marital vocation.

No

There is no current sin of contraceptive intercourse.
It seems they are having their cake and eating it too.
They sinned. They repented.

Any other commentary on your part is merely uncharitable speculation as to their current feelings about their past sin.

I couldn’t put is more succinctly than @1ke. They could, but are not required to attempt a reversal (depending on the procedure.
It seems they are having their cake and eating it too.
Are you judging or doubting their repentance?

The Church does not require that a couple have sterilization reversed. You can if you want to, but it’s optional. We learned about NFP as part of our marriage prep course. It was taught by a couple. The wife said, “We decided our family was complete, so Husband had a vasectomy.” Husband said, “Hurts.” She added, “Then we learned about Church teaching on contraception and he had it reversed.” Husband said, “Hurts more.”

I have said this before: God has been known to have a sense of humor where supposedly sterile couples are concerned.

The repentance should of course be sincere and not a presumption, but they can continue to have marital relations. It still has to be done in a way consistent with the ordering of the union.

exactly, it may or may not even be possible to reverse, depending on what they did, or would cause increased and inordinate amounts of pain and discomfort. The church does not require that, sometimes what’s done is done and you just hav eot move forward from there
