No, you’re not sinning. If you do this "“all the time” you’re not doing much else either.

I sure don’t think so. Praying the Rosary, etc. is usually the thing that gets non-Catholics fired up about repetitious prayer.

accurate AND witty! :rotfl: my compliments!

I believe that in one of the letters to the Thessalonians, Paul tells us to “pray without ceasing.” Is it a sin to follow that?

No I don’t think you are sinning…there is real power in speaking the name of Jesus. Praise His Holy Name!
Annunciata:)

well, yes. you’re sinning. being a sinner, and being in a sinful state (here on earth), it’s pretty safe to say you’re sinning.

but i see nothing sinful about your prayer habits. i WOULD recommend learning more prayers, not to replace the wonderful internal dialog you already seem to have, but to enhance it, and to learn to deepen your conversation with God.

think of it like this: if you’re married, your wife, i’m sure, never stops wanting to hear that you love her. however, if you just follow her around all day saying ‘i love you i love you i love you i love you’ you’re both going to get tired of the WAY you’re saying it. so love poetry and reading and learning and growing will help both of you to experience your love and your relationship much more deeply.

one other thing i’d say - it’s very important that we grow in our faith as we grow in our intellect. if we don’t ‘keep up’, so to speak, we will outgrow our faith, and when troubles come, we will find ourselves in the perilous state of facing adult problems with a childish faith. i’m not saying your faith is childish, but only that learning to pray other prayers (like the rosary, or learning great prayers by the saints, like francis of assisi or thomas merton) will encourage your faith to keep up with your intellect, and you’ll have an adult faith to use in coping with life’s … adventures. 🙂 God bless.

First, no, I don’t believe the prayer is sinful, and I agree with the other posters. Second, you might want to look into other forms of prayer, described in the Catechism 2697-2724, for a deeper relationship. As you have stated your prayer is all vocal. Vocal prayer is good, but see a couple excerpts from the CCC. You might want to expand it a bit, but please don’t let me discourage you from what you’re doing if you’re happy with it. Actually the way you use vocal prayer, it could probably be considered meditative – like the rosary – but I’m not an expert on that:
CCC 2699:
The Lord leads all persons by paths and in ways pleasing to him, and each believer responds according to his heart’s resolve and the personal expressions of his prayer. However, Christian Tradition has retained three major expressions of prayer: vocal, meditative, and contemplative. They have one basic trait in common: composure of heart. This vigilance in keeping the Word and dwelling in the presence of God makes these three expressions intense times in the life of prayer.
CCC 2704:
Because it is external and so thoroughly human, vocal prayer is the form of prayer most readily accessible to groups. Even interior prayer, however, cannot neglect vocal prayer. Prayer is internalized to the extent that we become aware of him “to whom we speak.” Thus vocal prayer becomes an initial form of contemplative prayer.
CCC 2708:
Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ. Christian prayer tries above all to meditate on the mysteries of Christ, as in lectio divina or the rosary. This form of prayerful reflection is of great value, but Christian prayer should go further: to the knowledge of the love of the Lord Jesus, to union with him.
CCC 2709:
What is contemplative prayer? St. Teresa answers: “Contemplative prayer oración mental] in my opinion is nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us.” Contemplative prayer seeks him “whom my soul loves.” It is Jesus, and in him, the Father. We seek him, because to desire him is always the beginning of love, and we seek him in that pure faith which causes us to be born of him and to live in him. In this inner prayer we can still meditate, but our attention is fixed on the Lord himself.

Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee O Lord! (St. Augustine of Hippo)
Just so you know, if your not praying constantly, your not doing anything at all.

I used the word “ALL” like in Romans 3:23 “all have sinned and are deprived of God’s glory”. We “ALL” know that doesn’t apply to “ALL” people!

Tom, maybe you need to pray more?

Peace,
John

Dear “ALL”,
The thread was about “Repetitous Prayer”. I don’t know if “ALL” of you read that. Thank You for your concern for my prayer life. I’ll try to learn the Our Father next week!

Hi,

I think you are worshiping which is an essential part of our prayer life. But if this is the limit of your prayer life, or all of your prayers are of the “remembered , off by rote” variety, you are not giving the Holy Spirit an opportunity to join you. When He joins in your prayers, you will be saying Wow did I really pray that, where did that come from , all the time realising you are being aided. He wants to join you in your prayer life. Please make your self available to Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Christ be with you

Walk in love,

edwinG

Well, i don’t know about that. I’ve spent time feeding the poor, building houses for the homeless, volunteering in disasters, teaching reading to poor chiIdren, etc, I wasn’t “praying” all the time, but I don’t think it was “not doing anything at all.” But I understand your intent.

I would think we “all” need to pray more, don’t you?

May the peace and love of our Lord, Jesus the Christ, be with you

Dear john654,

When my daughter was between 2-4 yrs. old she spent much of her time saying “I love you Mommy”, “Mommy I love you”, “I love you”, “You look pretty Mommy”, “Pretty dress Mommy”, “If I had one of those bouncy things I’d jump high and get you the moon”.

I was elated to hear the praise from the innocence of a child. Needless to say I ate it up.

Praise expresses your love, awe, and total reliance to the one you love. It should be the basis to all prayer.

YOU KEEP IT UP!

!
By the way, I never told my daughter, “Honey, you are being vain and repetitious. You need to stop that because you are offending me”.

Hmmmmm.

You asked if your repetitious prayer was sinning. Now you sound like you didn’t want commentary on your prayer life. If that isn’t what you wanted, then perhaps you can help me understand better. I realize some people were perhaps making lighthearted comments when you might have felt it was more serious, but I take that sort of stuff in stride when I post on these forums. Others aren’t always in the same mood I’m in.

I’m sorry if I offended you.
