In March, I sent a letter to His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The Apostolic Nuncio was kind enough to post it the Vatican City through his diplomatic mail to save me the trouble from doing so.

I have not received a reply of yet. Do you think it is likely that I ever will? I shouldn’t think His Holiness has too much mail. I know he is quite weak and lives a peaceful life of prayer, but do you think I will receive a reply. Or, if not, perhaps a generic reply from the Vatican City? I do understand that mail from the Vatican can often take months, but the Nuncio told me that he would have the reply delivered to him and then he would send it onto me. He also said he would let me know if it had arrived.

Has anyone previously written a letter and received a reply to the Pope Emeritus or to our current Holy Father?

God Bless.

I’d say be patient. As an important figure, Pope Emeritus Benedict probably receives much mail and it probably takes a while for things to get processed through. Between that and the process of mailing international, it may take a while. I can’t say whether you’ll get a response or not, or if the response will be from Benedict himself.

I once sent a letter to an important public figure, and I indeed got a response: 6-8 months later, if I remember correctly. And that was only within the US.

Thank you. I really do admire His Holiness for so many reasons. I fear he will return to the house of the Lord, in his own words, in a few years and so I really wanted him to know that there are so many Catholics who admire and appreciate him.

I don’t think you are going to get a reply. Maybe a form letter.

OP. I think I read somewhere that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI doesn’t use a typewriter nor a computer but writes everything by hand if he personally answers your letter.

Does Benedict have a secretary or other office personnel of any kind working for him? I expect he does, but I don’t know for certain. You might try asking the Nuncio, or someone in his office. They ought to know.
