Replying to specific responses

On many replies, I see an indicator at the top right of the post of the response it is a reply to. Whenever I click to reply to a response, it shows while I am typing who I am replying to, but then once I post I don’t see the indication at the top right of my post. Does it just only show to other users or am I missing a step?
 
I see that the reply symbol appears after some delay or other activity. We’ll see if it happens here.

It only shows if you are replying to a post that is not the immediately preceding post. If there is nothing in the corner of a post, that is either because the poster just hit the general “reply” button at the bottom of the thread or because they are replying to the post immediately above.
 
Now it shows up because this post is not immediately preceding my post.
