Several years ago my great uncle came to live with me during his last years here on Earth. While he was here, he received a couple of visits/confessions from the local bishop who he knew personally.

When the bishop was leaving after the first visit he directed me to set-up a chapel for my great uncle in a spare bedroom. He gave me permission to repose/expose the Most Blessed Sacrament and to contact him if there were any issues. I agreed. (I had set-up and MCed a number of Masses for him so we knew each other as well.)

I set up a proper/secure chapel as ordered (I take Holy Communion to some who are home-bound,so I have ready access to the tabernacle at my parish.) It was a blessing to my great uncle until he passed. He would spend much of his days/evenings in adoration. On his second visit, the bishop also liked the chapel. After my great uncle passed I asked for permission to maintain the Most Blessed Sacrament in my home chapel and the bishop gave me verbal permission.

Sadly now the bishop has also passed away, while he was bishop. Must I ask for his replacement to renew his predecessor’s approval? The entire time I have replaced the Host in the tabernacle once a month. On the parish’s holy communion log, I have always noted 1 Host for reservation at my private residence. There has never been a question.

Having Jesus Christ in my home for several years has been a great blessing. Must I ask the new bishop for approval? If anything I would like to wait for a while until I got to know him. Thank you.

Thus is usually not allowed, so you have been blessed.

Please talk to whomever is in charge of your diocese at the moment. They need to know this permission was granted and you will need to abide by whatever decision they choose to make.

He has a personal adoration chapel in his home. He is an EMHC and he replacing the host, in his home tabernacle once per month.

OP, what do you do with the old host? Dod you self-commune? Was that permission granted?

Talk to your local priest and donate the tabernacle bringing back all the hosts with.

I am really surprised the former Bishop allowed this to continue after he was no longer coming to say mass on a regular basis. A chapel that has the Blessed Sacrament reserved should always be attended by a priest on a regular basis. The norm under Canon law is that mass should be celebrated there at least twice a month. Is your pastor aware this chapel exists? A priest should be assigned as responsible for the oversight. The fact that you see the need to replace the host once a month seems to be a red flag to me, does it not concern you?

On the first Sunday of the month if I have say 3 people to take communion to, I place 3 consecrated Hosts in my pyx after Mass. On my way to my first visit, I duck into my house and replace one of the Hosts with the one in my tabernacle.

The Hosts are perfectly fine after a month (at least where I live – temp/humidity) – I am certain of this, but they wouldn’t be at some point down the road. Without getting all St. Thomas Aquinas, the visible accident can become rancid or stale – that too I am certain of, and it’s not allowed.

… and your pastor is aware that you do this?!

I certainly don’t hide anything. I make it a point to note in the communion log I am taking Holy Communion to Mary, Joseph and John, with one Host being reserved in my private tabernacle.
