Reprinting Fr. Lasance books

Hello Everyone,
For those who might be interested I am looking into have a couple of Fr. Lasance books republished using Lulu, a self publishing company which prints when things are ordered. I stumbled across a pdf copy of Fr. Lasance’s prayer book for religious which currently is out of copy write and I am looking into having it reprinted. I’ll let you all know how it goes if I do go through with it and order a copy of it.
 
I think that Angelus Press or similar traditionalist pubishing firm has reprinted/republished some of Fr. Lasances books, so be careful.

These firms would have the copyright now if it had lapsed earlier.

Mine says it’s a “faithful reprint of the 1945 copyright edition of the Fr. Lasance New Roman Mass” by the Christian Book Club of America. Bought it from an indult group 10 years ago. Do I need to confess? 😃

The following have been reprinted by
Sermons On The Blessed Sacrament And Especially For The Forty Hours Adoration (1900)
by J. B. Scheurer; Francis X. Lasance

Angelus press sells some of these reprints but I am almost positive they have not reprinted any Fr. Lasance titles themselves, if anyone has any more information on reprinted Fr. Lasance titles please post it here.
 
One of the rarest ones by Fr Lasance is “With God”, which hasn’t been reprinted yet. I have a copy of it. It was my Grandmothers’.

Every once in a while, you will find one on eBay. They go for crazy prices if they are in good shape. I did see one listed on a bookseller’s site. New in the box. 450.00 ! And it was sold a few weeks after I saw it listed.

I just googled it. At the very top of the search results was a link to Southwell Books. The link was from May 6th, and the book has already been sold.

The only other direct hit on the search was a link to this forum, one of my posts where I had mentioned the book on an old thread lol.

My guess is, whoever has the rights to it, isn’t reprinting it because they are trying to sell the rights for a large sum of money.

Is that really how it works? If something is no longer under copyright, can someone else assume the rights?

I may be wrong, but I think not. Look at all the cheap paperback editions of classic novels. They’re printed cheaply (by Penguin, Oxford, etc) because there is no copyright. Only the editorial notes and footnotes, etc, of their particular editions are under copyright.
 
When something goes out of copyright, it cannot go back under copyright (in the U.S., at least). Publishing companies who re-typeset public domain material often copyright their typesetting, but the text remains in the public domain. I don’t know about the rights to the Fr. Lasance books, though. What years were they originally copyrighted?

Hi Fr., With God was published in 1911. My Prayer Book, 1908.

Inside the front cover of my original (first edition) copy of My Prayer Book, there is a list of other titles by Fr Lasance. So they are 1908 or earlier.

I have two Catholic prayerbooks; one is a TLM Missal by Fr Lasance (from the 1930s), and the other is a small pocket-type prayerbook with an angel on the cover, given to my mom for her first Holy Communion in 1937.

I would hate to part with these because they remind me of my mom (even though they are from her Catholic days, which was long before I knew her!) But I wonder if they would be better off with a TC who could actually put them to use.

Do you still have the two Catholic prayerbooks? If you could part with them, we would love to have them! We go to the Traditional Latin Mass and we treasure old prayerbooks. Let me know!
 
I just bought his Prayer book… its a reprint and from what I can tell its not under copyright. It will get here in the next couple weeks when it does I will let you know exactly what the copyright info says…

Almost all his books are now available as free pdf downloads now due to the expiration of the copyright, so you should have no problem reprinting it.
