Good day and blessings,

I am sincerely in discernment for a monastic vocation. I feel a strong calling to the Trappist or a similar contemplative charism. I live just South of Baltimore, MD and I’ve had difficulty finding a spiritual advisor. Any assistance would be invaluable.

Thank you for your help Marian. Have a blessed day!!! I’ll say a prayer for you.

Dear Bill:

I would recommend you take the time to attend a “Come and See” vocation discernment retreat sponsored by the Trappists or Benedictines. These retreats are very instructive and you have access to both the vocation director and novice master.

Also, some people recommend a guided vocation retreat, while others recommend a self-directed retreat. I think it depends on what you expect to get out of the retreat as to your choice. There are other programs available such as the monastic experience program which I believe could help you as you discern your vocation.

If you would like some material from St. Bernard Abbey, e-mail me at stbernardmonastery@yahoo.com and provide your slow-mail address. We are here to help you make the right decision with respect to your serving the Church.

Bro. Mark Worsham, OSB
Vocation Director

Thank you Brother Mark.

I recently returned from a vocation retreat at Gethsemani, where I was invited to stay in the monastery for a week. It was an ideal experience for helping me in the discernment process. For a variety of reasons I am certain I am called to a contemplative abbey.

A parish priest has kindly helped, hearing my confession and meeting with me, but because I am considering a contemplative vocation, he is not the ideal spiritual advisor for me. The priests of my parish are great, but they are gently nudging me towards either a diocesan priesthood or deaconate and I don’t believe that is my calling.

I am in the process of trying to find a community that is a good mutual fit and would be very interested in more information regarding St. Bernard Abbey. I will contact you via your website.

God bless you and your community during the days of Lent and may you have Blessed Easter.
