I plan to fast and pray along w/ those joining the “40 Days For Life” fast-and-prayer vigil. I’ve never done such a long fast. (By the way, they don’t suggest the fast has to be a “total” fast, nor even one from food, just “abstain from anything that keeps you from God”!!!) But I want to do a partial food fast as part of my entering into deeper prayer and remembering my total dependance on God. Are there Catholic instructions regarding extended fasts? Are there Catholic helps or advice? I’m looking for both physical and spiritual “tips!” I know I have to prepare my body, mind, spirit, schedule, etc. before-hand. Any suggestions? Or any internet links you would recommend?

The Eastern Christian (both Orthodox and Catholic) tradition says that our fasting should not be self-willed, but obedient. Otherwise, we are brought closer to the proud self-willed demons, who never eat at all.

Therefore, in a “votive” fast such as this, you should consult your confessor for advice.

the traditional Lenten fasting practice of the church is perfect for a 40 day periods, with centuries of experience in its benefit. anything harsher you should get your confessor’s permission.

nothing between meals except liquids (and don’t stint on liquids whenever you are fasting), one main meal, two small meals which added together don’t equal the main meal. Don’t fast on Sunday. No meat except on Sunday, condiments made from meat products are okay.

Eastern church practice is different, so follow it if that is your tradition.

Thank you both so much for your response. I find this very helpful. I will definitely consult my confessor! May the Lord bless you! 🙂

my tip would be fast on the week days and use the weekend as your “cheat days”.
