Good morning from Ireland…Just heard Mass from Killarney Cathedral at 8 am. Three Masses as always on Sunday… at the end the priest announced requiem masses at both the 10.30 and the 12 noon mass. It feels utterly wrong to me on this day of all days. Rapidly falling away here.

Don’t fall away too quickly–Sundays are the slowest day here!

(Actually, I think you should not fall away at all! Why are we Catholics? *Because of Easter! *Because Christ died on the cross *for us, *to save us, because He loves us so much that He *wants *us to join Him in Heaven! And the Reurrection of Christ, the fact He “resurrected Himself,” (for which we do not even have a word), is the ultimate evidence that He is indeed God Almighty! Don’t fall away because of what we imperfect humans do: keep your eyes on Christ and stay in His Church for His sake!)

PS Sorry I couldn’t answer your question, but I thought you could use some encouragement 🙂

Christ is Risen!

What exactly do you mean when you say that the priest “announced requiem Masses”? Was he announcing mass intentions for the repose of X? That is very different from offering a requiem Mass. In fact, the word requiem is rarely used these days, outside of the Extraordinary Form, so I am confused on this one.

Rosebud77, please don’t get discouraged by this priest’s decision. While I agree, the requiem masses are not usually heard on Easter (or during the Holy Triduum) you are obviously strong in your Faith or you would not have been in the 8am Mass to begin with. Hold to God and yourself and what you know is right for you. Today is the celebration of Christ arising from the dead, and we must focus on the beauty of that moment. God bless you, and I will remember you in my prayers this morning as I attend Mass across the ocean from you.

No he was telling the congregation that the masses this morning were requiems/funerals. when I started checking on the death notices I learned that this is happening on Easter Day in a number of local churches … so I gave up. This happened on Palm Sunday too. I feel it is wrong to put any human between Jesus and His people… The immediate family need to mourn and we the church family need to celebrate.

“Requiem” is used all the time here in Ireland in death notices and funeral are huge events. The last few weeks I have found funerals at the cathedral almost every time I attempt Mas and I find it wrong to invade that private occasion as I said on the Palm Sunday thread. . I am rarely well enough to get to Mass so I find this hard and friends in other countries raised here say it was not like this when they were here.

Thank you. I was not at 8 am in person; but via the wonderful internet livecam we have here. I am rarely well enough to be at Mass these days. My calling is as a solitary anyways and I cannot cope with crowds healthwise or in any way now. It was a very old priest who mumbled and rambled and warbled,… Long for the services of my Anglican childhood often

For me it is part of a wider disillusion. I lived decades in very remote places with almost no access to formal church. When I came to Ireland I truly believed it was a safe and holy place… this was on the eve of the uncovering of the massive child abuse. I am simply reverting to my old content of little physical contact but huge contact with Jesus. As my health lessens it is a relief to do this. My deepest prayer is here alone on the mountain or in a monastic ruined church. Yes He in indeed God almighty as I know full well so I need to stop looking anywhere but at Him and stay in my deep solitude. thankfully I have excellent spiritual help. Many thanks to all here

The Church here is in a very bad way now. I meet many within in many ways. Listen and pray with and for them and it must break the heart of God for they are reaping what they have sown

Can you clarify further?

Funerals Masses are outright forbidden during the Triduum by Church law.

Was there a body, and actual funeral services? Or was is simply Mass for the repose of a soul?

Rosebud77 I am very sorry you are unable to attend mass in person and I know the webcam is brilliant. as for funeral masses at easter or Christmas I guess there are so few priests that they have to combine regular mass with funeral mass you are not invading peoples grief or private moment if you attend. perhaps it is different where you are but in my parish in middle Ireland we have a very vibrant church with good size congregation at all masses and very forward thinking priests who include all. keep the faith as for church here in a bad way I disagree I feel it has been shaken and it will take time but it is getting better and we cannot just walk away or give up we need to attend mass and pray, as a very old priest said when I asked how to answer people when they talked bad about the church or questioned my faith he replied pray for them no need to do anything other than that.
