I just love the ending of Flannery O’Connors story Revelation.

About the respectable people coming at the end of the procession to heaven and “even their virtues were burnt away”.

When I read the story it was like hearing the voice of Someone who walked this earth 2000 years ago. The taxcollectors and sinners…

🙂
Jesus thinks so differently from us sometimes. Sometimes it’s easy to fall into the “respectable” way of thinking.
What do you think?

Have not read that although I would like to read O’Connor. What does she mean by “virtues”?

You just have to read it.
Err…okay. I was under the impression that you were taking a cue from the story and coming up with a question and asking for feedback on the question itself rather than asking for feedback on the story itself.

Yes I did, sorry, but I think you should read the story anyway.:o

You do not know the authors mind, but I took it as something like respectable persons with respectable virtues are not really humble but it is the secret pride in their respectableness and their respectable virtues that somehow is burnt away by the fire of Divine Love.

(Sorry it took so long I don’t think in English, therefore my spelling is not so good either.:o )

Ok. I see and that makes sense. I was wondering if she was implying that cultivating the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love and the natural virtues of justice, temperance, fortitude and prudence was a meaningless gesture. That would be quite provocative considering she was a devout Catholic and the Church recommends the virtues so highly. 🙂

yes… thats a fault that I have… I am very self-righteous and now that I know that as a major fault of mine apart from pride  i am working hard to get rid of it…

The " you old warthog from hell go back to where you came from" is a thing I thing we need from time to time.

Even from the lunatics.😛 😃

I meant we need to hear it from time to time.
The wart hog thing being our self-rightousness.🙂
