It is possible, however, for someone to do their Purgatory while in a “wandering form”, as Purgatory is more a process than a location.

Are you referring to the possibility that ghosts exist?

As G.K. Chesterton said, if you see a ghost of your deceased Uncle Harry, your Uncle Harry is probably not involved, as he is either in Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory, and not wandering around in your parlor. While it may be possible that a soul in Purgatory could be permitted to send a message or a warning or a request for prayer to this world in the form of a vision or dream (I suppose), it’s a lot more likely that any “ghosts” that aren’t attributable to natural causes (hoaxes, misunderstood natural phenomena, mental illness), would be just a psychic residue, like a recorded message on an answering machine that endlessly replays in a vacant office. That voice you hear isn’t the soul of the person who recorded it.

Just my opinion.

Okay-here is my situation-as a small child in my parents’ old house, I have encountered a ghost. The bathroom spigot turned itself on, my parents saw shadows on the walls, I also had a “hand” grab my hand-like holding it. When I reached for the light-the “hand” disappeared-leaving me quite shaken up. I ran down the stairs screaming that the hand grabbed me, associating that experience with the Adamms Family show. I didn’t know anything about ghosts at that time. I was not sleeping or dreaming-rest assure that. Years later, when I was in my room at the dorms (Norton AFB, CA) in Dec 1989-the day before I went to Wright-Patterson for humanitarian assignment, the light came on by itself. Years later, I learn from my father that that room that the hand grabbed me used to be a nursery-a couple in the late 1800s lost their child, and I guess that woman’s spirit reached out to me somehow. I believe that she was in purgutory-and somehow reached me somehow. As for the connection with the light in California vs that house in Ohio with the nursury-maybe that grieving spirit of the mother associated me somehow with her child-who knows? It is a mystery-yet my experience is real. She (the spirit) never grabbed my hand ever again-I guess because she knew she scared me and wasn’t malicious-again-a mystery to me. So-my guess is that the hauntings are spirits in purgutory. 🤷

Some people will believe in ghosts no matter what common sense arguments we throw at them.

Such people will never change. 🤷

No, I don’t mean ghosts. I’ve been reading a lot about demonic possession and opression lately. There was one reported case from a book that seems legitimate (I guess you never know) that was very interesting. It was about a woman who married into a family with a terrible history of incest. Her husband had a homosexual relatinoship with a priest, and the two of them sexually abused children. Ever since getting married, the woman had experienced supernatural occurences, but they got worse and became threatening when the priest eventually died. The exorcist who helped her said that he believes that the dead priest is what caused the aggressive activity. He made the point though, that it’s not actually the priest but the evil thing that had a hold of him. He told the woman that she needed to forgive the priest for what he had done (He and her husband had also abused the woman’s son) and to pray for his soul to find rest. This is the situation that’s really confusing me, not that’s it’s something I expect to ever understand. Once you reach purgatory, you’re saved right? Can a demon “have hold of you?”

That’s scary stuff. If I am correct, we Catholics don’t believe in ghosts, but it is possible for demons to mimic the dead. I think any kind of supernatural experience like that is grounds to contact an exorcist, which I guess would be done by asking your bishop if the diocese has an appointed exorcist, then, if not, contacting surrounding dioceses until you find one.

While ghosts form no part of Catholic teaching, I am not so sure that they can be categorically dismissed. Our LORD’s followers thought He was one on Easter Sunday; and HE, while correcting them and pointing out that ghosts have no bones, did not say that they did not exist.

Purgatory could easily be done by someone in a ghost-form.

I have read that book also, and was a bit confused by that. I would have thought the Priest would be in hell not purgery, and hell is not about finding rest.
