What would your response be to someone who called out the Catholic Church for not openly pledging to help restore Notre Dame? Especially when you have secular people around the world pledging to help. How would you articulate how the churches cash flow works?

The Archdiocese of Paris has long had a nonprofit to fund restoration work at Notre Dame, since long before the fire. So my response to anyone who called out the Church for not helping would be: “What on earth are you talking about?”

“Also on Tuesday, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi offered the Vatican’s technical know-how to help rebuild Notre Dame.
The President of the Pontifical Council for Culture told reporters that the Holy See could take part in some specific area of the reconstruction, making reference to the technical expertise of the Vatican Museums.
“We have the type of know-how that the whole world recognizes as being of a high quality,” said Cardinal Ravasi. “So I think an eventual future offer by the Holy See will be significant.””

They realize, of course, that the French government confiscated church property when it (the French govt) was bankrupt in 1790 (a quick Google for “Assignates” will talk about that) and then they confiscated church property again in 1905. So no church built prior to 1905 is actually owned by the Church.

The government allows the Archdiocese of Paris to use it for free, but the Archdiocese has to take care of the property upkeep and the paychecks for those who work there.

But if the government is going to forcibly confiscate property… how much is the Diocese expected to pledge to restore something that was taken from them over and over again throughout history?

The Church has better things to do than pledging massive amounts of money into one church. I want to see Notre Dame resurrected, but the cultural meaning it has to France means it is France’s church to care for. Besides, to me, it’s encouraging to see so many secular sources of money being pledged towards a house of God.

Don’t trust many of the secular sources pledging money to rebuild. Giving big money means they want a say in how it is rebuilt, which would probably be something awful and non-Catholic if it were up to many of them.

Archdiocese of New York has already raised over 100k as of this morning.

Not trying to be funny but while looking at all the charred wood that fell from the roof, I was thinking maybe they ought to try selling small pieces of it to raise money. I would consider buying a piece. It’s all going to be discarded somehow, anyway, no?

That would be, my jaw dropping in disbelief at someone professing such an ignorant notion . . .
