Restriction on getting married on the Assumption?

I am planning a wedding for 2009. My fiance and I met on August 15th and that date is a Saturday next year. A couple of Catholic friends I know told me they didn’t think I would be allowed on the Assumption.

Obviously I will talk to my priest. I know there are restrictions on getting married during Advent, etc. but I have never heard anything about the Assumption.

Any experiences with this?

You can’t have a Nuptial Mass on the Feast of the Assumption but you can get married in either a Liturgy of the Word with the readings from the Rite of Marriage or a Mass with the readings for the Feast.
 
My BIL got married on the Feast of the Assumption in 1988… it was on a Monday and the close of the Marian year (which was why they moved the date up from November.) I can’t remember all the details (that was 20 years ago and DH and I had just gotten married 6 weeks earlier!) but, hey, 20 years and expecting their 12th child right around their anniversary date…

I guess it worked!
 
I would go ahead and have the wedding on the Solemnity of the Assumption. It is a beautiful way to start your new life together because you are asking for the intercession and patronage of the Mother of God, who, herself, was a married woman. You also get St. Joseph’s patronage, to boot.

Use the readings for the feast. My PV had a great homily when a couple chose to get married on that day. Mary’s Assumption into heaven is her complete union with God. She was always initimately united as the daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son and the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Her Divine Son, is a walking marriage between God and Man. It is a union that will never be broken.

I wish I could remember the whole homily, but, he tied in the two occasions quite masterfully.

Furthermore, we do get a lot of requests from couples who want to marry on December 12th, which happens to be the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. They do use the readings for the feast.
 
As others have said, you can still have a wedding during Mass on that day, it is just that the Mass texts must be those for the solemnity (nothing can pre-empt those texts for that day).
 
I know this is off-track but I am so tired of “text message type initials”.

“Brother in law”, “dear husband” and ??? (I couldn’t figure that one out, either, though I gather it has something to do with a pastor, as he gave a homily…
 
Thank you Dixieagle, I am not in the generation that speaks in initials.😃 :o
 
If it was a Holy Day of Obligation there might be a problem with scheduling in another mass that day. However, since it is on Saturday, I think the Obligation is waived.

However, I would get still my reservation in early.
