I have been engaged in a conversation with a protestant friend of mine regarding forgiveness of sins and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We’ve hit a bit of a speed bump regarding the retention of sins by a priest.
As a practical matter, how does one explain the thought process by the priest as to whether sins should be forgiven or retained? If sins are retained what typically are the reasons and does the sinner eventually return for forgiveness? Do you have to go to the same priest?
